compression stroke when re-timing crx?
i'm trying to adjust my timing belt and it says to make sure TDC is on the compression stroke and my question is how exactly do i make sure its on the compression stroke and not intake? i'm guessing you make sure the distributor rotor is facing towards the #1 spark plug on the distributor cap? well thanks for any help. oh yea one more thing...on the camshaft where the timing belt sits...does the belt have to be exactly in the middle? because it seems that most of the timing belt is on the grooves...but just a little is sitting off to the side, like its not fully centered as it should be? ok thanks again...

look at the cam gear. there should be marks on the face of it, like lines that were grooved into it. turn the cam gear so that the "up" on the face of the gear is on the top most part of the gear. from there, if you look at the bottom left hand side of the face of the cam gear, you should notice a line grooved into the face of the cam gear. there should be a plastic tab behind the cam gear that supposed to line up with this line, and when you line them up, it should be TDC Compression stroke. I've made the mistake before of timing it on the exhaust stroke, but the car runs nearly identical, just the cam is 180 off, or just completely backwards. i dont see what issues this may cause besides being harder to time.
Pull the #1 spark plug out and rotate your crank while feeling for pressure...not suction.Or you can place a long wooden dowel or something that *wont scratch or fall into the cylinder* while you're turning the crank and when it just reaches the highest point and stops moving, you're at TDC...but check your cam gear marks and make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 plug wire just to be safe.

thanks for the help guys. yea i made sure the marks on the cam gear were all aligned...and felt for compression on the #1 spark plug...then i rotated the crank a couple times to make sure everything lined up and sure enough it did. thanks again
You mean how do you know if its the compression or exhaust stroke.. It doesnt matter since tdc is just where cyl 1 is a the top.. The crank turns 2 times to the cam turning 1 time..
