what is on top of 96+ gsr manifold
Just wondering if anybody knows what is the black thing on top of the 96+ gsr manifold that has 2 lines running from (one line running to or from the charcoal canister and one going to the manifold) it and a clip with 2 wires? What does it do and why doesn't the 94-95 have one?

I believe that is an EGR valve.

Nah, I'm pretty sure that's the EVAP purge solenoid.
Gas vapors from the gas tank get stored in that charcoal canistor and when the ECU sends a signal to that solenoid on top of the manifold, it opens and allows gas vapors to enter the intake manifold.

It was affecting my idle when my IACV was messed up. I could tell when it purged because it made my idle jump high for a split-second.
More likely the solenoid is messed up than the charcoal can.

What makes you think the solinoid is messed up? Is there a C.E.L? if so is the code in relation to the EVAP? If thats the case check your gas cap. Sometimes if the gas cap is left loose it will triger an EVAP code being the vapors are escapeing. If you think its bad because on a bad idle, I have never had an evap purge solinoid cause a poor idle. I would check elsewere.
i think its bad because if i turn my car on and disconect it, it is the only thing that messes my idle up. everything else will shut it off. it starts idleing exactly as it does when it is messed up and the vacuum leak sound goes away exactly the same.
