Default 97-01 (SPK) Sunroof Plug Kit, DONE No 56K here!

OK its finally done. We are now taking order for these kits. The price is $350 shipped for Honda-Tech members. The kit is made of prepreg carbon fiber which has a very low resin content compared to traditional wet layup. This panel has been clear coated on the top side for UV protection and is glossy on both sides. If you dont like the look of carbon you can take it to your painter and he can paint over the clear. Either way its lighter than a lexan piece.

This plug is meant as a performance weight reduction upgrade and as such the sunroof becomes non moving after install. The kit comes with everything needed to install including instructions on how to seal it from water and mount the plug flush with the body lines.

The factory sunroof panel weighs in at about 25 lbs and the motor, tracks, and tray weigh in at a whopping 25lbs. In total you loose about 50 lbs of vehicle weight from the very highest point on the car. There is no other part of the car you can replace to get the same benefits. It effectively lowers your center of gravity. You would not even get this benefit by replacing your factory hood with a carbon hood. Kits will ship in two weeks so call soon to make sure you get yours.

None of the hardware in the kit is off the shelf. It was custom made just for this kit.

Outside

Inside

A couple more things I've learned from the other kits we have released.

Experience will show that there will be a few people out there that say this same thing can be accomplished with lexan and you could do this yourself much cheaper. Yes I know you can rivet a piece of lexan to your roof for $20. This is obvious but it would NOT be a bolt in situation, it would require measuring, cutting, test fitting and even then it might still look bad and leak. Did I mention several trips to various stores. Besides, it would look just like you spent $20 on it

Another item for those that just want the look. We can sell you everything you need to cover your sunroof in glossy carbon Fro $195. It just won't make your car any faster. The SPK will.

So how stiff is that carbon fiber without any frame or bracing under it? Won't it become like a big drum above your head as the wind and pressure fight each other? I had my sunroof plugged without any bracing (just sheetmetel) and that is what I experienced. Once bracing was put in under it (like the frame under a hood) I did not have any problems.

do you make CF glass replacements? i think most luders would still want their moon roof functional.

That's my car

The carbon is rather stiff. But I have yet to test it out on the high way at speed. You can't tell in the pics but I have no rear suspension on the car right now, and several other things need put back together before I can take the car out. It will be several weeks before I get everything done I need to get done.

well that stuff is formed in an autoclave...so technically it's some of the strongest formed CF you can possibly get. Those cheap cf hoods you guys all get are hand wet layup, have excessive resin and need the bracing to stay rigid. An autoclave will use the least amount of resin, and form the strongest part with less layers.

The car sounds a bit boomy when you shut the door but at speed the noise isn't much since the hole thing is sealed and flush mounted. You don't get any wierd air pressure zones. It is very stiff.

Yes, because glass is so very thermally efficient.

Well its the difference between a lot of R&D vs. minimal gains. Then you are dealing with building a system that will would require a more expensive kit and you only loose about 25lbs vs. loosing 50 lbs. You then have to worry about building a custom weather seal and a more expensive molds for the panel itself. I didn't think people would pay $500 for only loosing 25 lbs. I know there are a lot of people who can't loose their sunroof but at the same time there are those willing to do whatever it takes to get maximum gains. A 50lb weight loss on top of the car is huge!

We can build you a custom plug kit for that car if you'd like. It's $400 for a custom kit. IM me for details.

I actually have the sunroof plug kit on my 92 Civic Si, and I noticed no extra noise with the plug while driving, even on the highway I havn't noticed any extra noise at all. It is a little boomy when you shut the door as Adam said but no addition noise when driving.

Looks great Adam, glad to see you finally got it done.

Doesn't the 4th gen one have a metal covering for the sunroof? Can't you just gut it and rivet it into the opening? Just a thought.

Compared to that thin layer of CF. Yes.

I think your heater can safely make up for the heat loss.

Soon as we get back into the warm wheather here in Washington, I'll see if I can stand rolling around with the sunroof closed. If I can, you'll be getting a PM

How does it "bolt" in? I see fasteners through the top around the outside edge. Do those go to little claps or a brace/frame to clamp the panel tight. I think this may help me get more helmet room too. Maybe not, but the other benefits seem useful. What kind of weather sealant do you use? Is it like a 3M double-sided tape or like a butyle rubber compound used to seal windshields and headlamp lens? Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want this to be non-reversible If I don't like the daily driver performance. Not to mention it's not one of those cheap mods.

The black machine screws you see bolt the panel to tiney custom brackets that are riveted to the flange. There are black nylock nuts on the other side of the carbon panel, once again custom. The panel is water sealed with black RTV silicon. Not fun to get off but it seals perfectly. It is UV and chemical resistant. I include a method of flattening out the seal in the instruction booklet. Yes this would give more helmet room. Hope this helps.

50 lbs off the roof will help any car!

All of the motor equipment of the sunroof esembly is located in the roof of the car right? This would be for a 4th Gen, because if I get it I want to completely get rid of the sunroof, button, motor, anything that would temp me from going back LOL...

A 4th gen would be custom and yes it would require removal of everything. You can keep the headliner and dome light if you like though. I custom 4th gen would be $400
