car just dies after swap....need help
we put a new motor in my eg hatch saturday night. the car started up kinda weird.
made a few adjustments, car turned on, idled a little, then just died out. turned on the car again, did the same thing.
we turned the car on again and held the throttle down so the car can warm up. after the car warmed up a little, the car stayed on, but idled funny. i would idle like at 800, then drop to 500 like it wanted to turn off. after the car completly warmed up, the car stayed on and idled at 1k.
the next day, i started it up the car, same thing happened. it would turn right off. i would have to hold the gas down for awhile while it warmed up a little for it to stay on. when it does stay on, it still idles like crap.
here's what i've done so far:
changed the iacv on the bakc of the intake manifold
changed the map sensor
changed the spark plugs
made sure everything was on correct timing
messed with the idle screw on the tb
here's what i got:
00 b18b motor
skunk2 manifold
rc 310cc injectors....do you think the injectors could be causing the problem?
i'm using the stock fuel pump also

well what fuel management do u have for those 3102.. they arent that big but cmpared to the stock ones the ecu probably doesnt know howe to control them...... possibly when the car is cold you might be flooding out the motor just a little i dunno why dont you try putting seom stock injectors back in and see what happens...
BTW why do u even have 310's??? u dont need them unless you are NOS turbo or super charger

Well I cant help you with your problem but I am probably gonna put a b18b in my hatch I have been debating on what engine to go with so I would really like to hear how you like the swap. Thanx
i was turbocharged on my other motor. my other motor had the obd2 clips, when i put the rc 310cc injectors in, i changed the clips to obd1 so i can use the injectors. when i got another motor, obd2, i didn't want to change the clips again cause i didn't want to splice all the wires up again, so i just put the rc 310 injectors back in
even though i'm all motor for now.
my cousin has some ls obd1 injectors that i can borrow from him to see if that helps.
i didn't think the rc 310cc injectors would make a difference since i had them on when i had turbo. i was using an fmu and walbro fuel pump when i was boosted though.
you think the injectors could be causing the problem? could they be throwing in too much fuel at idle causing the car to die out?
i'm running a stock ls ecu also.

well...its really just put the injectors back to stock huh.....
don't really know if the skunk2 manifold would cause the car to die.
also...can i use some stock dx injectors on my ls motor? don't they flow the same...240cc??
thanks

yes the dx injectors are 240s just like the stock LS injectors. i highly doubt the 310's are the problem. i have a couple friends running around w/ 310's on the stock ecu. 310cc seems to big the biggest injector the ecu can compensate for.

i didn't really think it could be the injectors either, but its worth a shot.
also....i don't have any type of intake on, no filter or anything, but that wouldn't have anything to do with it would it? its just the tb with nothing on it. i need to get an intake from my friend so i can put it on.

nah that shouldnt affect the idle. i went around for a couple days w/out one on and had no idle problems. check all the vacuum lines...is the car smoking at all?

that wouldn't do anything since you don't have a MAF sensor.

yeah...my friend said there was black smoke coming out the exhaust when the motor was reved.
i saw some white smoke coming out, but i think thats the condensation thats in the exhuast cause of the weather around here.

also...i don't have an o2 sensor hooked up, but it did this even when i had my o2 sensor on.
the wires got melted cause the harness fell and touched the exhuast piping, i just havent wired it back together yet.

If its the stock fuel pump, it might be on its last limb. See if you can hear it priming. Also check the fuel pump relay, it could also be your fuel pressure regulator. Just my 2 cents though.
you can hear the fuel pump when you turn the key foward. i don't think its the fuel pump cause i first had my walbro 255lph fuel pump in and it did the same thing. i just put the stock one back in.
fuel pressure reads at 42psi at idle.

i just had the same problem w/ my b16. at first glance...the timing belt did look like it was on....but turns out it was off its 3 teeth. after that...it started up fine. my symptoms were same as urs. it started....sputtered....idled...and died.
just feeding u more ideas...hope it helps.

i don't think there is a leak there. i thought if there was a leak, then the rpms would be higher, not the car turning off. i will check again though.
the timing looked right on timing when we checked it. we put it to tdc and everything looked good.

ignition timing is good. we messed with that and saw no change in the way the car idled.
my friend told me that when he took off a vacum line, that the car idled fine, like nothing was wrong with it. we are going to put the stock injectors in today and see what happens.

if you dont have a 02 sensor hooked up i have a really good theroy why your car is doing that....
Without the o2, your car will run EXTREMLY rich. Add on the fact that you have larger injectors, you are probly floding the car, or fouling the plugs. It has to be a combonation of those 2 things.
Have you checked your new sparkplugs at all to see how they look? Oh yeah, did you properly gap them?

wait a minute...did you say you're using a stock ls ECU on a GSR motor? i'd probably swap that out if that's the case....if not...i dunno man...but im about to do the same swap in my eg coupe...peace. OBD-I though.
this started happening when the o2 sensor was on. it just recently burned the wires.
i'm using a stock ls ecu on a ls motor. don't know where you got that i'm using a gsr ecu.
i haven't checked the new plugs to see how they look. i did gap them properly also.
didn't get a chance to swap out the injectors, i will be doing that tomorrow.
any other ideas on what to check?
thanks

i know this could be like comparing apples to oranges, but my stock cx motor did something like that, and i took the same steps you did to solving it. i found it was my vacuum. i woulc say check all the vacuum lines again and again, and even for little holes. hope it helps ya out some. good luck!
