Default Any hope for this prelude?

I have a 1993 Si 4ws with automatic tranny. Before I bought the car, the previous owner let the timing belt break and it tore up the valves and what not. A local shop here rebuilt the engine completely, instead of just doing a partial job. The engine has about 25,000 miles on it since the rebuild.

Anyway, I have been trying to figure out what I can do with it because I want to take it a step further than just exhaust, intake, header.

I have basically ruled out turboing it because I have heard that boost + auto tranny = dead tranny. Plus not being limited to 5-7psi on stock internals isn't the best option.

I have thought about a tranny swap but kinda figure it would be a bit more expensive than what im wanting to pay. Even though I can get a tranny shipped to my house for cheap enough, finding all of the other needed parts (pedals, console, guages, etc) would some what time consuming.

And as far as I know, my last choice would be the h23\vtec dealio.

Don't want to sell my prelude though, I feel that even if i did sell this one for another one, I would hurting myself in the long run (buying something that i would have to put more time+money into just to keep running).

Any feedback would be great guys, thank in advance.

Mike

Well if you want to do something but are on a tight budget then I would go with the tranny swap. It would be worth it, and prolly the cheapest best mod you could do right now if you want to keep it pretty cheap.

Well, im not exactly on a tight budget, especially since taxes are coming back in a week or so. I probably wont be able to do anything yet though, I'll end up waiting till around summer time this year to get anything started.

Yea, I will be buying a HELM manual. 1993 Prelude Service Manual (All) is all I will need right?

It seems like you're in a bit of a tough situation.

My number one recommendation would be to get a tranny swap, but aside from the fact it is a costly ordeal, you have to deal w/ the fact that you have to hunt down a 4WS manual ECU.

You could go H23 VTEC, but you'd have to get your ECU chipped in order to be able to increase the redline and to be able to rev the motor out to make the extra horsepower.

You could boost it, but I have never heard anything about the durability of the 4th gen auto trannies. It's prob. the SS trannies you have read about. I would guess the 4th gen tranny would have to be stronger than the SS.

Nitrous would be a nice solution. You are gonna have to weight just how much money you want to dump into this car when it's all said and done.

A 5 speed tranny is a must. If I where in your shoes the first mod I would get is a 5 speed LSD tranny swap.

For boost? F22. Anything else, the H22 tranny.

Id say go with a JDM h22 complete swap with 5spd lsd tranny, there are a couple of other things youll need to do the conversion, like shift linkage, and some other things

i agree w/ 4thgenlude......JDm h22a w/ 5sp LSD...might be a little more money, but less hassle in the long run...

So is jdm h22 tranny w/ lsd the best choice for an h23?

I could always turbo it as automatic, and then if it dies on me, swap out the trannys

Thanks for all the info so far guys.

I would do the swap way before the turbo. Automatics are no fun IMO and you will be very impressed and happy with a 5speed.

Or you could just put swap the trannys first and sell your old auto tranny for a couple hundred and then turbo it.

I'd find a Lude with less work to have to put into it before getting to the main project you planned. and Automatic means, you're going to be spending more $ than you planned on a manual.

Oh yea, what happens if I don't use a 4ws manual ECU? Say if i keep the automatic one? What are the differences between the two? Aside from the obvious: ones automatic and the other isnt.
