Default OT: Home Theater, HDTV

Hopefully no one will find this post in the wrong forum altough it might be a little offtopic.

I am looking for a new television for my appartment.
While at it I wanna purchase a home theater system, I am not a big DVD person but I'm sure now I will finally enjoy watching movies, I got few questions.

Is HDTV the way to go, when buying a TV? Is widescreen a good choice?
Right now I'm getting basic cable, do I have to order HD cable or is it a standard these days?

At the end I just wanna see what do you guys recommend, maybe we can post some pics, or links.

The requirements:
TV, direct-vew, 32-36 inches, HDTV? widescreen? Price range around $1200
The Home Theater system, doesn't need to be top notch but something good for the price that will make a decent setup with the TV. Price range not more than $400

Waiting for your suggestions.

I have been eyeing new tv's lately. I would say go for hdtv in the 16:9 format if you have the money. Then go rent some dvd's.

HD is definitely the way to go. As far as your price range goes, you'll be limited to the 30" widescreen size (direct-view TVs). Look at the offerings from Samsung, Phillips, Toshiba and Sony. If you want a bigger widescreen than that, 34" is next size but the price will move closer to $2K. At that point, you might as well look at RPTVs since you'll get more screen for the money.

As far as your cable goes....you'll need to upgrade your service to include HDTV. If you end up with a TV that has a HD tuner, you can pickup your local broadcasts over-the-air.
