How do you remove the control lever from AT on an '89 Accord? HELP!!!

How do you remove the control lever from AT on an '89 Accord? HELP!!!
It seems that there might be a problem with the control lever but from a diagram on Majestic Honda the control lever is one piece? It looks like the tranny has to be removed. Can anyone please confirm this?
