i was looking at paintscratch.com to price out some paint and was wondering generally how many gallons of paint is required to paint a car such as a hatch. i was wondering how many gallons or basecoat and how many gallons of clear coat. if anyone can help me that would be nice. thanks!!

 

It all depends on who sprays it and what you are shooting for. For a hatch if you will need less than a gallon of each but by the time you buy 3 quarts to make sure you have enough you can get the gallon for the same price. That way you always have extra for other projects.

I am doing my hatch tommorow and you really only need 2 qts of each that will do about 4 coats base and 4 clear so it will come out nice and even

 

my shop used 1 and a half gallons, a lot but it looks good. i have a 4dr

no they didnt "charge" me for a gallon and a half, i brought the paint in myself

 

if you're doing the jams and everything, 1 gallon will be enough. if not 1/2 to 3/4 will do it.

how much clear coat is usually needed?

 

like the other guy said.. 1 gallon of each. sealer/primer, basecoat, clear coat.. and if you want a midcoat for like pearls..

 

on paintscratch is that the going rate these days for a gallon. or is that fairly cheap???

 

i am about to paint my crx and i was lookin around on paintscratch and saw that 2 quarts would cover a jetta, corrola, or geo, does that mean 2 quarts of base/clear/primer or what? cause i thought you only needed 1 coat of primer...

 

Buy a gallon of paint, a gallon of clear, a gallon of clear and a gallon of sealer. Spills happen, trust me and if something doesn't turn out right and needs to be repainted, it's good to have extra. A gallon will do a Protege5, the door jams, hatch jam and engine bay.

I want to know how they used a gallon and a half on a 4 door unless they painted the shell too.

 

I bought a gallon of single stage with wetlook hardener and a galon of reducer, and I painted my hatch inside and out (exept from enginebay) and It was more than enough, I still got a lot of paint left over, but is good to have extra in case of accident or something good luck
