I got lots of carbon build up on the outside of my muffler tip, and on my rear bumper as well, in fact i gotta wash my car every week. When I warm up my car in the morning, there is always some condensation that comes flying out of my muffler, and its usually black due to all the carbon inside the tip as well. On the floor in my garage there is like a black spot of carbon right where my tip is. I used to have a FPR but got rid of it since i didnt need it a while ago. My theory is that my O2 sensor is bad maybe? I'm most likely running rich. Or it may be my ignition systemnot burning the fuel efficiently cuz i got those cheap 9.3 mm plug wires? My distributor cap and rotor may need replacing? If anyone else has had this problem, let me know how u fixed it. thanks

 

Either burning oil, running rich or you dont have a cat.

 

Do you use a cat? Maybe it's clogged. Does your exhaust smell like rotten eggs?

 

i would say your burning oil and the burnt oils' residue (black carbon ash) is sitting in your pipes and gets blown out when you get on the gas....thats what mine was doing anyway, but i could also see a little bit a blue smoke when at WOT!

i changed my pipes and the insides were totally coated black!

I was wondering if you ever happened to find out what was causing all that carbon build up. I noticed the same thing on my '91HB a short while after installing an intake. I was told it was because I was running too rich as well but haven't really done anything about it. Any advice would be cool.

 

Yeah, truthfully, it sounds like you're running rich, but there is a good possibility that you are burning oil though. Have someone rev your car, and put your had behind the tail pipe when they rev, then smell your had, you can tell if it is gasoline, and if it is running rich but the sweet kind of smell, and plus the tip of your muffler will look fuzzy. Hope this helps.

i got the same problem lately its rather annoying. my friends say the exhaust smells pretty bad. i assume im running rich.

 

i got the same problem. The only thing i have on my car is Skunk2 exhaust. I checked the distributor cap and rotor button, checked plug wires, checked plugs, checked pcv valve, and checked the timing. If it is burning oil or running rich how would you solve this?

 

Black dust on the back of the car is just normal. I get a LOT more now that I'm turbo. My friend has the same setup as me, but no cat, and he gets a whole lot more! Honda's just run rich toward the upper rpm's. Just normal.

 

yea maybe thats it my friends tell me when i shift at high rpm a puff of black smoke comes out.

 

Same problem here....atleast my car is black and not white cuz then I'd have to wash the bumper instead of wiping the tip.

Marauder you said you have dust on the back of your car but on the back of mine it seems like oil or something, if i rub it, it smears? u got the same crap on the back of your hatch?

 

I think every Honda i know has the same problem, some worse then others but they all pretty much smoke.......

oh and dont know if you hav a coupe or a hatch, but the hatch is the worst cause it gets caught up under the spoiler and ends up on your rear window

I would say that you haven't worked on very many cars yourself have ya?

Carbon builup is from fuel not oil.

 

Can happen if you do only an exhaust and no intake. Or the other way around, intake and no exhaust.
Intake and no exahust, your takeing in more air than can be pumped out due to OEM exhaust.
Exhaust and no intake, computer overtakes and runs more fuel than needed. Think you get the general idea.

 

When i got my Magnaflow I noticed the carbon on the bumper. Its normal. You just don't see it from the factory pipes, because of the small tip.

your 17 years old man!.....i've been driving a honda for years b4 you had your licence and yes i do ALL my work thank you. and YES burning oil causes black dust in your pipes, dumb ***!

ya I'm running a cat and no my exhaust is not smelling like rotten eggs. Anyways, I changed my plug wires to stock today, just traded my 9.3's with some guy i know at work. the idle feels smoother, but im gonna go to the junkyard next week and pick up o2 sensors from a 2000 civic so it will be as new as possible. Hopefully that will fix the problem. if that still dont work, im gonna rip out this engine and put in a new one!! haha easier said than done. Oh by the way, I had that FPR on for ever since 98 till middle 03, so u think they would have destroyed my o2 readings?
