Vtec crossover point
Hi everyone. I have a question about the Vtec on my D16z6 engine.
When I accelerate, I dont hear the v-tec open up like on the 2000 civic si's. my friend's 2000 makes a lower pitched rev noise up to when the vtec opens, then you can clearly hear the higher pitched whine of the vtech above 5,600rpm or whatever it is. On mine, there is no volume or pitch change as you climb the rpm scale to 6,000. Is that normal?
On another friend's rsx type-s, you can really hear the vtec open.
Is it possible that something could be wrong with the vtec where the timing doesnt change?
Thanks in advance for the help!

is your d16 stock? I suggest, I/H/E, and you might be able to hear the cross over, although..In my d16..I can't tell the difference..nor hear it.
In a sohc..its hard to notice Vtec.

dont waste u time & $$$ on headers and exhauast.. just get intake and u'll hear it around 4.5-5k i believe.

I already have the AEM cold air, SIR ecu with a Mugen xh4 chip, but not too much else. The chip lowers the Vtec to 4,400 rpm and raises the redline to 9,000. This is a true mugen chip, straight from japan, so I know that it is programmed right. It kinda bothers me not being able to hear the v-tec.
I cant feel that much gain at the crossover, so I dont really know whether its working or not.

Is your engine stock? Just use the stock ECU that's not chip or disable the chip because I dont know why you would want the ECU to be dumping more fuel than u need... Maybe I'm missing something, but stick with stock ECU if you have no internal mods
One question... how much did you buy that chip for and did you get it off eBay???

on my d16z i could hear vtec and feel it, i only had a home depot intake
also that chip isnt gonna do anything for u untill u mod it and take it to the dyno, u might be lossing power instead of gaining

When I ordered the chip, I had to give mugen all the details of what I did with the car. I did that through a friend who could speak japanese. The asked what I'd be using the car for, and I told them Autocross. They said that then I would want the lower 4400 rpm vtec as well as more fuel under WOT when the Vtec was engaged. They explained that if you put 10% more fuel in during the Vtec cycle, using the setup I have, I should have a noticable increase in power.
Mods: AEM cold air, stage 2 proclutch, 6.5lb Flywheel (Advan)

Took my car out for a test spin again. This time I heard it... quite loudly. I figured out what it was.... Hehehe.... Anyhoo... it actually seems to vary when it kicks in. some times it is at the 4400, some times at 4800. I can really hear it now.
