ok i have just finished rebulding my motor with new je pistons, eagle rods, acl bearings and golden eagle block guard and also every seal that could be replaced has been. and also the block has been decked and honed as well. i am about to drop the motor back in the car and before i fire it up was wondering what are some steps to go by or what should i do to crank the motor up..

i used assembly lube on teh necessary parts and put in NON SYNTHETIC oil like i have read.. do i need to disconnect the distributor and crank the motor over first so that oil gets pumped through out the motor???

 

What I did was I spun the crank with a 19mm about 5 or 6 times, then when I started it up I let it run for about 15-20 minutes without touching a thing. I broke it in with all my turbo components installed, but tried to stay out of boost as much as possible. Broke it in using the "easy" method. I'm at about 2800 miles now. Finally did a compression test the other day and it's 180 across the board.

when you broke in your motor...what was the highest you reved it to? when I broke in my last motor I didn't take it above 3000 rpms until after 1500 miles...

 

i like to crank new engines over a few times before adding spark to get some initial oil pressure. then i run the engine @2500 rpms with no load for 20 min to set the rings. then just drive very easy for 750-1k miles. this is the same procedures that Payne tech, and Honda dealers recommend.

Might be setting myself up on this one, but do you drive the car around and keep it around 2500rpm's or do you sit in the driveway and just hold the throttle to 2500rpms while motor is running?

 

I didn't keep it below 2500 RPM when driving around. I tried to keep it below 3500-4000, but went over a couple of times in the first 1500 miles. I actually hit quite a bit of boost before 1500 but definitely took it easy for 95% of the time. Just try to stay out of boost and go easy on it.

Then of course there's the "beat the hell out of it right away method" but what I don't like about that is we have forced induction. Those guys have factory motors running the way they were meant to be run. They don't have an extra 6-30psi to consider

LOL...I have heard quite a few people say that, but those are mostly the people that work at the shops and have access to new pistons on a regular basis with little to worry about if you know what I mean....

 

We cranked mine over without the ecu fuse in until the oil light went off, then started it.
I've been running my motor hard since it had about 10 miles on it(we did the rough break in).. It didn't see boost until about 1000 miles, but it has 1500 miles on it now and running perfect...

have you done a compression test on it at all?

 

yesI checked compression about 2 weeks ago and it was 165,160,160,160. ~9:1 compression.

 

i have heard that once you start driving it, you can increase the rpms by like 500 every certain amount of miles. Does anyone know anyting about this?

 

what are good compression numbers for 9:1 compression?? thats what im running, when i was running stock compression i had 210 210 210 210 now that im running 9:1 what should i be getting? 180 180 180 180?? or lower?

 

my 9.1 jes on a 84mm gsr are 190 across

i just shifted at about 3-3.5k till 1000 miles. compression 180 across in 9.1 CR gsr.

 

ill be doing this when i break mine in here in a few weeks:

fill up with non detergent oil(supertech,etc). crank over with ecu fuse disconnected until oil light goes off(a little longer after that happens). start it up and warm it to operating temperature and then go out and drive it like you plan on driving it, hard i hope. taking the revs up nice and high and then letting the car engine brake back down. then change the oil/filter after 20 or so miles and your good.

i would also recommend a magnetic drain plug from napa.

that probably would be TOO gentle, sure it would probably work...but our cylinder walls and rings are soo soft, that I would be afraid of getting past the "wear in" window and the rings getting too smooth and never wearing into the block. 1000 miles is a LOT to drive only to 3.5k revs
