Default tach install problem

i recently installed an autometer tach in my friends civic... well everything is fine except the tach will not read properly... i clipped the blue loop on the back of the tach via the instructions... it reads about 3500 at idle and if you tap the gas it buries the needle... it was also brand new... i know i hooked it up correctly but i cant figure out whats wrong... anyone have any ideas??

on most tachs there is setting fors for 4 cyl, 6 cyl, and 8 cyl. it should be in the back of the trach and this is somehting like 4 switchs that have to be in the right order for what cyl engine you have.
what kind of tach is it?

Yeah if it is autometer you should have to clip all the loop wires behind the tach..

i tried clipping all the wires in the back... did the same thing... but we figured it out... turns out he has one of those autozone dizzys and im guessing the colors of the wires are different... we started tapping into different wires and we found one that worked perfectly fine... i originally had it tapped into the usual blue wire... what i found odd was that it still functioned while tapped into the blue wire even though the reading was way off... oh well atleast its fixed
