Default Alchohol those who have done please help

So I have finally got my car up and running. Sorry it's not a the usual that you find in your forums, but the fact is the intelligence here is far greater than back in the VW forums.

So I want to change over to methenol later this year, what do I have to do in regards to the car to do so, I realise alot bigger injectors for sure, different mapping, I have a very compatable fuel setup already, with a full Aeromotive mechanical belt drive system, based on the secs that this was going to be the final plan.

Intercooler, as far as I have learned, due to the cooling properties of meth it's not required? What about compression of the motor, right now it's at 8.5:1 higher or lower? Ignition anything special to worry about?

Anyway, I guess you can tell I am very new to this, but I have commitment and desire and I would love all the help I can get.

Thanks

Darren

You need effectively 2x the fuel volume with methanol...Most serious cars run 8-1600cc Bosch Injectors. Get yourself a lambda meter that measures alcohol and you should be fine. I think good power is made on meth around .85 Lambda...

Make sure your pump is capable of the extra volume per hour...I think the belt driven Aeromotive would be sufficient. You need to upgrade all your fittings, etc...make sure they are anodized, otherwise the meth will corrode them. I would also upgrade to the Kevlar lines that Aeroquip has...Methanol doesnt like Rubber too much either.

Flush your system with racegas after everyrace. One thing I heard from a V8 guy was that Meth only corrodes things when air is present, so If you dont crack the system open and introduce air, you'll be fine...but thats hear-say, its good practice to flush your system accordingly. Also, be careful around meth because its toxic and you gotta keep your containers sealed otherwise the Meth will gel up.

Make sure you have an ignition system that is upto the task...Individual Coils fired by a nice CDI Box would be a step in a good direction.

Thats all for now

talk to a guy named chris laufer from vw paradise in san marcos ca. i worked there for a couple years and saw some crazy vw ****. Chris has a red convertable that runs alcohol with alot of boost and nos and i think he is running machanical injection. I think he could aim you in the right direction.

superdave said it all perfectly...flush it out after every race! and you can run much higher compression that 8.5 to 1... i would run 10 to 1 or higher...

BE CAREFUL! Methanol has its ups and down. Lambda depends on weather or not you are N/A or turbo. On a turbo engine you should be between .50 and .60 on methanol. On a N/A engine I woudn't go any leaner than .75 lambda. The engine will need 2.3 times the amount of fuel compared to the gasoline. Just remember adding double the amount of fuel injectors will not give you 2 times the fuel so make sure you factor that into the equation. Also remember lean on
gasoline=m-80 like boom. Lean on Methanol=top fuel like boom

see this is why I am so glad I discovered this place, there is more usefull information here than in any of the usual places I go, I really appreciate it.

Keep it coming guys, your thrilling my brain cells......

Let me tell you a little more about my current setup, the car is a new beetle with a VR6 2.8L engine, the engine is fully built from top to bottom no expense was spared on the engine.
Fuel system was designed by Aeromotive specially for the car, belt drive pump capable of supporting over 2000hp, custom regulator everything, so no worries there, both fuel and alchohol compatable. Right now we are using a T64 turbo to set the car up and once we have a set of parameters to work with Turbonetics are going to custom build a T78. I'm running Tec 3 for engine management, running full sequential instead of the usual phased.

Theres alot more I could go into, but I would be typing for ever

I have only just started down this road, just started the tuning on this setup on gas, but feel the future will be to change over to alchohol, so I am just filling my brain with as much info as I can, everything I have searched on the web so far has led me to the domestic world, thank heavens for you guys and the import world.

Cheers

Darren

Also plan on bumping up to MSD digital 7 at the least. I would buy a MSD digital 10 and run one coil.

Wow, i'd have to disagree with everything you just said! That is WAAYYY too rich and i've never seen a piston melt on methanol like they do on gas....

You'll be lucky to see 1300-1400 degrees! Try to melt a piston with that!

What kinda a/f ratios did you run? There's two ways to do it, and both work. One is run it rich, .65-.70 lambda, and run alot of compression and timing. The other is run it lean with low compression, low timing, and an intercooler. I think the latter is a more reliable setup...
