Default Roll Bar & Race Seat......should they be together ??

I have heard a lot of common about recommand install a Roll Bar when using 4/5/6 point harnesses.....my question is:
What about those aftermarket Race Seat ( especially those non-recline type like Sparco EVO or Recaro SPG ) ? Is it safe to install a Race Seat w/o Roll bar ??

Thanks

It's NOT safe!! In fact, its down right dangerous!! Imagine what will happen when your car rollover and the roof start crushing down. Just let me have the seat... or I'll trade you with my stock civic seat...

Yea. You dont want to run a harness without a roll bar....you wouldnt be able to "get out of the way" of a colapsing roof.

I would not reccomend a race seat for the same reason...the high bolsters would not allow emergency movement.

You can run a race seat in your car if you want but it can be awkward if it is race tight. You can run a roll bar or full cage in your car if you want. You can run race belts in your car without a rollbar or cage but you should not use them with a reclinable seat.4,5 or 6 pt. belts are meant to be cinched tight to work properly and so are under enough tension to cause a reclinable seat to collapse backwards with force considerable enough to compress your spine.

I would argue that a race belt, race seat and a harness bar at the least would be safer than any OEM 3 pt. and recliner in a rollover. No huge flame intended(but a little one) but how are you "getting out of the way" of a collapsing roof unless you are held to the floor?

No prob Victor. I see myself (if the roof ever did come down) that my natural tendency would be to "lean" over towards the passenger side to "get out of the way". I have seen recently where cars were COMPLETELY flat from the doors up. If you were in a 5 point harness, how would you "lean" over. I would think that you would not be able to. Please continue with your theories in this situation.

The human body does get moved out of the way of a crushing roof if it wants to or not. Reclining seats 'flatten' out & the body gets pushed out of the way (or along with) the roof because the 3 point belt is now slack. I too have seen a lot of cars get crushed down to about door level. I am a fireman & usually work on the Rescue. That is the rig we send on car accidents. It won't happen with a rigid race seat & a harness.
