Usually, you can find the info online. In VA, I had to fill out a few forms, wait in line for a few hours at the employment office, and visit briefly with a counselor. I also had to agree to take any work they sent my way (they only send relevant work - the chances of them finding something for a professional are slim).
In order to receive benefits, I had to call in weekly to an automated phone line to confirm that I was still unemployed, actively seeking work (which I needed to be able to prove), etc.
I *think* I got $500 every other week, which was less than 1/5 of my salary - it was also the maximum allowable in VA. The amount varies by marital status and number of dependents (single and none in my case).

Generally speaking you file an application at the local Unemployment Office. Your employer should have given you information regarding the procedure. The amount you will receive is based on income. Also, there may be a waiting period.
On topic: Good luck with the race event-but also remember ther are requirements to keep the payments coming.

Sorry to hear that, I believe the going rate in Mass is 65%. As for the process it's pretty much what Crack Monkey said.
Good luck finding a new gig. What do you do?

Been there, sorry to hear that, in Ohio you just call a 800# and they send you checks in a couple weeks, when you are unemployed the best thing to do is call friends and take trips to there houses. I traveled more in the 7 months I was unemployed than I did in college. And they give you this bull crap about "actively seeking a job" but I never had anyone call or ask about that from the unemployment office. But I did have to call or send in these card to keep the checks coming. I got 1/2 of my salary.

Nothing, once a week you need to call an automated line and answer the questions. "Press 1 if you have looked for a job in the last week" or something like that.

As noted, you just call and click the button that indicates "Yes, I looked for a job."
In theory, they could ask you to prove it by supplying names of companies you have contacted seeking employment. So, as long as you are sending resumes, you are fine. The chances of them actually wanted to confirm anything are almost zero.
Also, most states have a two week waiting period before they will pay out benefits.

In Michigan it can take up to a couple of months to get checks if there is any question about how you lost your employment. That's how long it took a friend of mine. I think the one time I collected (1993?) it took about 2-3 weeks. Stop reading, go to the office now!
nate,
sorry to hear that. Seems like you'll have better luck in this economy. I got laid off 2 years ago and was unemployed for a whole year. The job market seems 2 to 3-fold better now.
Remeber to enjoy the time you have off instead of stressing about it. I actually miss being laid off. It was great. I did things I never would have had the chance to do. I drove a few cars back from Chicago and Florida (doesn't sound fun but it's cheap and I had a blast), did some testing for Grassroots Motorsports Magazine down at Michelin's Proving grounds (i actually got my picture in an issue driving a Factory 5 spec racer on the Michelin test track!!), did the Grassroots Motorsports $2002 challenge (best experience ever!) and just little day trips here and there.
In Mass. the max is 60% of your salary for a max of $512/wk before taxes. When you claim income from unemployment you claim just like regular income so keep that in mind. You can elect to take the full gross amount or have them take out the tax. I ended up taking the gross, I wanted every dollar i could get right away.
For Mass. everything can be done over the phone and thru the mail. I never had to talk to anyone in person, wait in line, or actually prove I looked for work. They're pretty quick with getting you the money. The sooner you call (today would be good) the sooner you'll get your checks. It might depend on the stipulation of how they filed your unemployment but I got paid retroactively from the day I got laid off. No waiting period. I got the check in less than 2 weeks if I remember. It should be the same for all lay-offs in mass. I know Mass. you could collect for 26 weeks but I think it might have been bumped up to 39 or so now. Not sure.
You call the state unemployment office (sorry, forget the number. It's on a website, search for Mass unemployment insurance or something similar.) They send you a check every 2 weeks along with a card you have to fill out and mail in every week that asks if you looked for a job and if you made any money. The cards need to be mailed out every saturday, no sooner or later. I guess they wanna make sure you're not having too much fun!! DO NOT FORGET OR THEY DON'T GIVE YOU YOUR MONEY. If I wasn't gonna be around I'd leave the card with my roomate and have them drop it in the mail Sat. morning.
The sweetest thing that you could do til you get back on track with a real job would be to get something cool and get paid under the table and collect at the same time. Be able to keep payin bills till what you're really lookin for comes along. Good luck. Not that you missed many sunday's of auto-xing but you really don't have any excuses now.

Happens to all of us. Go to the unemployment office now! And if you got a severance package, you may not get unemployment right away. At least that's how it worked in Ohio.
