Default 2004 Transmission

Does anyone know if the 2004 and 2003- transmission bolt up the same? My brothers 2000 is grinding a lot (I think he's just pounding into gear to hard) and he wants to change out the tranny. I tell him to live with it until some used 04 tranny's turn up. Not sure if they'll even fit though. Anyone have any experiance with this?

How bad is it grinding?

Have you tried changing out the transmission fluid first?

very good idea. try changing the fluid first

the thing w/ the new trannys, they were designed for a lower reving car, i would go w/ another 00-03 tranny if you were gonna replace it

I will add a third vote to change the transmission fluid first. The F20C's transmission is so sensitive to fluid condition. Once fluid starts aging, it starts to get notchy (I've never experienced grinding in mine). Just go with Honda MTF.

something else to consider is for your brother to change his driving habit/style so a new tranny wont be ruined again.

try to get a 02-03 tranny if possible. the 00-01 had their share of problems and the 04 tranny comes with lower gear ratios which is not really ideal for our 9k redline.

I helped him changed the tranny fluid out. It didnt do any good. We used gm synchromesh fm, the stuff people swear by. The grind he experiences is if he shifts 1->2 @~5k or greater. He has to throw it in neutral and rev it up for it to not do it.

As for the gearing of the 2004, I did some googling and found this:
Gears 1-4 = 4% lower for performance, Gear 5 = 1% lower, Gear 6 = 2% higher

not a huge difference but it's prob not the best idea. If anything youd prob want 1-4 gears shorter. What is good though is the 2004 synchronizers are made of carbon instead of brass... the new material supposedly works better.

Even if the '04s have different synchro's, the shifting will be the same if operated improperly. Basically, the tranny's aren't faulty. Most are not used to the short throws of the shifter and the hand moves faster than the foot so gears are grinded. It only takes a few consistant poor shifts to ruin the synchros and permanently round them off/damage them.

Sorry for the late reply, was out of town. We've tried replacing the fluid as Tilt said with the FM GM Syncomesh. It shifts smoother, but the grind is still there. We already know the main problem is the abuse the tranny goes through, and a new tranny will probably go through similar abuse. I'll look into the 02-03 tranny, but the carbon syncro's are what caught my eye about the 04. It might have a better chance of surviving the shifting. So again, does anyone know about the 04 tranny's compatibility?

I am having the grinding problem too. I have brought my 03 to Honda already to replace the 2nd gear synchros. After a couple months the problems started again. IMO, I think there's some quality problems with it.

Searck S2Ki.com, this has been discussed before. I think the thread said it did bolt up, but I am not sure.

it will bolt up... the f22c is just a stroked f20c.

exactly. the engine setup or size(physically) hasn't been increased.

I have a 2002 civic Si, and had my tranny replaced 3 times in 10,000 miles apart!!!

i also did research on the s2000 trannys for problems...indeed they had the same problems my Si has. THe synchronizers just dont hold up. THey are thin brass synchros....unlike the carbon steel synchros found in the new 2004 S2k....

the tranny will bolt up like the other guy said....its just a stroked motor. the block is the same. The gears ratios are different though....you might want to research that before you buy a 2004 tranny!

Awesome to hear, thanks for all the new input. We'll have to do a quick check for the speeds and such at different rpm in different gears. From what I've found it should actually make for a better autox tranny, could eliminate some 1st gear downshifts.
