Audi S4 Wagon vs. Integra Type-R
I was just coming back to work from lunch a few minutes ago when I had an encounter with a silver Audi S4 wagon. My works main campus is nestled right off of a newly constructed freeway here in Houston that enjoys thin traffic, even during the lunch "rush" hour. My encounter with the S4 started off as I tucked in behind him at about 70mph to pass some slower traffic. I saw him looking in his rearview mirror and then a moment later is when he laid into it. I was still sitting in 5th gear because I was hoping to get beside him and race him heads up. So I dropped it into 4th (about 7K rpm, well into VTEC at that point) and proceeded to give chase and try to make up a 3 car length deficit. The rpm's are flying by as I make a decent 5th gear upshift at a tach indicated 8600rpm. Rpm's are still climbing, and I'm actually gaining ground on him! 2 car lengths now, and I'm DEEP into VTEC in 5th gear, just inching and inching up on him slowly but surely while I see him glancing into his rearview every few seconds. I was thinking, "Man, this race better be over fast, because I'm on my last gear!" So, satisfied with making up about 1.5 car lengths from a long 4th gear to 5th gear pull, I let off and headed toward the exit ramp, and he did the same. Turns out he works at the same place I do, but probably in a different building because he took a different entrance to work.
I was pumped, and I still am! I just pulled on an S4! The outcome may have been different if I wasn't directly behind him drafting. But still, it was an exhilirating feeling. I'm just glad I didn't wreck and kill somebody. I really loathe street racing, but sometimes I just can't help myself.
gg S4! Oh, my mods: "Just an AEM intake." and one JDM part.

I'm not the least bit up to date on Audi's, so I was wondering which motor is in the S4, is it a turbocharged 4 banger or something else? Anything similar to the Turbocharged 4cyc found in Jetta's etc?
Thanks for the info.

I had a run in with a chipped Jetta 4cyc. turbo. All I have to say is that thing had tons of mid-range but no top end at all. He would pull hard instantly on all 3 of our rolling races but would hit a wall hard and i would inch up ever so slightly in the top end department in each gear.

Not much power but a chip gives it nearly another 70hp.There is a one here in town that has a chip and exhaust it runs a 13.1.I was with a bud in his ITR and we raced him.The words *** kicking come to mind. They are really nice cars.Total different animal than the ITR it isn't a light spoty car but certainly a fast smooth car.
The turbo seals go on the S4's if you overboost the stock turbos. A setup that replaces the stockers with larger turbos is a better, more reliable idea at the expense of more turbo lag and $$$$$.
They are heavy as chit and don't corner well.
For a kick-*** grocery getter the S4 is great, but for the emulation of a true sports car experience I say....ITR all the way.

Not to mention that they DO NOT come in automatic... the drivers know what they are getting into.
UH, they still do and if not, they used to come with the tiptronic 5 speed auto.

keep in mind that the 2.7L Bi-turbo is built to minimize turbo lag and increase refinement and low rpm torque.
That same 2.7L Biturbo in RS4 clothing produces almost double that output.

I raced one on the track... he ran 14.6 w/chip and filter and lowering springs (if that helps)... I expected it to be faster... that was on a hot day, my 330i ran best of 14.9 that day stock.
Stock S4's should be running at low 14's... I dream about this car every single night... Ohhh what a beautiful SEDAN!!! I dont dare to dream about a M5, way outta price range...
Here's my brother's S4:

Wheels are 18" BBS CHs.
I've driven it-- it's really fast, and corners quite well, but doesn't feel as 'nimble' as my Integra. I imagine that is because it weighs about 1000 pounds more. The stock shifter sucks, we're replacing it with a UUC Motorwerks piece.

Lots of misinformation in this thread. btw - that picture of the race prepped Audi is an A4, not an S4.
Anyhow, it's a fast car, and it'll still outrun an ITR on a track, if they're prepped to about the same level and both have good drivers. See my sig.
Busted turbo seals... Don't corner well... Oops, someone forgot to tell me.

I dream of owning an S4 or M3/M5. It's something about luxury and torque!!! Let's admit it, 1.8L 4 cylinders is jut not enough. I want low end torque damn it!!! Okay I will shut up now before I dirty my desk.
