timing belt snapped on 88crx si
timing belt snapped at idle what do you think my chances are that there is now internal damage?
do you think just replacing with a new timing belt will fix it?
Thanks

I'm 99% sure you have at least one bent valve I doubt that you have any bottom end damage because the belt broke at idle. What you have to do is take off your valve cover and you can see the height of the vale stems if one looks low then thats the one(or more) that is bent.
How many miles are on your CRX? If its not too many, I would do a mini-me swap. The same thing happened to my 89 Civic Si. The timing belt broke at idle. My motor only has 130,000 miles on it so I just decided to go ahead and do the mini-me swap. I'm in the process of doing the swap right now. In case you don't know what a mini-me swap is, it where you take off you 88 CRX Si head and replace it with a 92-95 Civic Ex/Si or 96-00 Civic Ex 1.6liter SOHC vtec head. You can gain some good power from doing this swap and it should only cost you about $300-$350 if you install it yourself.
damn....my brother went through the same thing with his car...his timing belt snapped and he had 12 bent valves!!!
when you bend valves there's also a chance to crack the valve guides
right now he is in the process of getting his single cam back on the road with a NEW Vtec head
i suggest you do that
OR do what i did...
when my head gasket blew on my single cammy...
i swapped a b16

I have seen several Si's break timing belts and have no bent valves- Pull your valve cover off and shake each rocker arm- If there is EXCESSIVE clearance then you have bent valves. Especially if it broke at idle- you are probably OK.

I dont caere what any onwe says you bent all 16 valves , and it sucks.... I totally rebuilt my d16a6 rinds bearnings, the whole **** sha bang, and diddent reallt tighten my timimg belt tentioner belt - 14mm-6 bolt pattern- If you use a 12 you'll streip it and really be fucked, any way I have a couple of 1.6 single heads. Valves are good, Email me .

Or do the test the right way and run a compression test, and even better, a leakdown test. These *will* show bent valves.

To the other guy who said all 16 valves are bent-It would be difficult to bend all 16 valves AT IDLE- how many T-belts have you seen messed up?- just yours eh? well -that must mean all valves bend all the time- but if you want to assume the worst go ahead- tear the head off- I'll laugh my *** off when you find your valves aren't bent. I've seen a DOHC VTEC prelude break a belt at 75 mph and it had no bent valves- I guess TIMING is everything.

Trust me...Your valves aren't necessary bent. There is a chance that they are bent. But they might not be bent. My friend who drive a 89 Civic Si as well had his timing belt breaking while he was doing 70mph on the highway. The head and the valves were fine. He just put a new belt on it and it was good to go. It depends if you get lucky or not.
