I've got one (can't even remember the brand..something like Cobra I think) that I picked up for 89 dollars at Best Buy. Works pretty decent for me if I leave it on the highway setting.

The Valentine one is just about the only detector that in my opinion is worth buying. If you wanted to save some money just be careful and watch for the cops and learn where they sit.

Valentine one is by far the best radar detector I have ever used. Knowing where the cops sit can help but I'll tell you this from experience, they are not always where you would expect them to be. Valentine one has saved my *** soo many times, much better than cobra or passport 8500.

One of the major reasons why EVERY radar detector is at a major disadvantage is that the police often use INSTANT-ON. This means that their antenna is not transmitting a constant radar wave and therefore cannot be picked up by any detector (jammers work on a different principal). Once it is activated the radio frequency travels at 186,000 miles per sec...So, by the time your detector beeps, he already has a readout on you. However, the more sensitive a particular unit is to x, k, or ka bands, the better chance you have of picking up a deflected or scattered wave from a targeted vehicle ahead of you. Laser is a whole different story...If I were you I would: 1) find out what band the police in your area utilize 2) plan my purchase accordingly (there are write-ups on detectors on the major auto mag sites ie. car/driver, motortrend etc. 3) not count on ANY detector, except for a little help here and there. Just one newbs opinion, but hey i've been on the OTHER side, so take it as you will.......

Hand Held CB radio, turn to Ch 19 and let the truckers tell you where the cops are

V1 is the only one worth getting. In Cali, they really only use radar on the open hwy. In the city, cops will typically pace (follow) you. So even if you have the best radar detector out there, it doesnt mean u can let your gaurd down
