I have a 2001 Honda Accord 4-cylinder W/auto transmission at 60K miles. The transmission is acting weird lately especially when it's cold in the morning. The problem is that it hesitate shifting between gears when it's cold and only for about 2 miles or so. After that it's fine.

Any Ideas? I checked the fluid level and it's fine.

Relax. It's probably just the cold weather.

I have roughly the same problem, and I've only got 48k miles. My intake sounds a tad deeper in the cold, and the car doesn't shift as fast as it usually does. That's usually when I first start it up in the morning. Then, it shifts normally as I'm on my way to school, or work.

If the problem doesn't go away when warm weather shows up, then I'd get that checked out.

 

Are you letting the car warm up well before you drive it? Have you changed the fluid lately? Did you use HONDA fluid and NOT overfill the transmission.

 

I am not doing anything differently to the car or my driving for the last 2 1/2 years. I had the transmission fluid changed at 50K with HONDA fluid and filled at correct level. The problem is only recently. The feeling is like the transmission slipping. The car would be at 5-10 mph, before it changes to 2nd, it would rev up between 4K - 4.5K RPM (without increasing the car speed) before it would change to 2nd gear.

 

You should have changed the fluid the first time around 30k or less. If I were you I would change it again using only Honda fluid. My 98 has 116k and my transmission shifts funny sometimes. I can actually hear and feel the transmission shift from 2 to 1 and 1 to 2. Sometimes when I come to a stop i hear a click sound. Basically, HONDA transmissions do not shift as smooth as Toyota's even with high mileage.

 

they definitely shift harder in the colder weather--try letting it warm up a little bit and see if it makes a diffference

 

This is normal. Just let the tranny warm up and you will avoid the tranny shifting hard or slippage.

who changed you ATF? Which one of the following was done at 50K?:

1. They hooked up a machine to the cooler lines and did a big flush

2. They drained, and refilled the ATF ONCE.

2. They drained, and refilled the ATF, drove a short distance, and repeated 2 more times.

Thanks for all the replies. Since my wife drives the car, I am going to have it checked out by the dealer for peace of mind.. I wouldn't want it to die on her on the road.

 

I've been told it's normal for a Honda auto to slightly shift hard, but I don't know much about Hondas, much less the newer ones. My Mom had two or three (can't remember) 2nd gen Accords and I think the auto shifted hard in all of them and all were eventually replaced. Mine shifts a little hard, thus the reputation, but it's got 209,890 miles on it and still runs fine, so I dunno.
