Default question about intakes

haha okay so i know there are ebay intakes for like 30 bucks and aem intakes for like 200 bucks. now the question is, is it really that big a differnce? intakes consist of the tube, filter, the sleeves, and the hose as well as the clamps? now, why pay 200 bucks for an aem one when u can buy an ebay one for about 85 percent cheaper? the only difference is probably the filter and the painted tubing. im not hatin but i just dont kno why the prices differ so much. i mean, if there is no difference, then i mite as well do all my shoppin on ebay and get an EBAY-POWERED sticker! OH SNAPS!

I honestly think the tubing doesnt make a differ. its the filter. just slap a k&n filter on and have the same results as spending 200$ on a aem intake w/ a K&n filter. Ive experimented and trust me its the filter.

I agree too, I have an intake in the mail $33.90 total. I can't wait to get it, then just get a new filter. Metal piping is metal piping.... but $30 is way better than $200.

they are the same thing however people tend to spend the extra money on 1) the name AEM and 2) its CARB exempt, and legal in all 50 states..i rock the ebay intake, and it works fine!

I disagree, I bought a injen intake for a $140 and all I have to say is PERFECT FIT!

You can go generic but your not going to get a good fit. I bought the AEM short ram and HAD THE WORST FIT EVER.... the intake arm support was rubbing badly against my ABS lines and dented them, SO I TRASHED IT AND BOUGHT THE injen.

I recomend spending alittle more money and getting one that is custom made to fit your vehicle EXACTLY ensuring a secure fit.

You know what they say, "you get what you pay for." and in my case i did when i spent $80 on an intake.

Injen, Comptech, DAC gets from me

I'm sorry Mr. Monk but I have to disagree. My ebay twin pipe intake doubles as a CAI or a SRI and neither one of them had fitment issues. The CAI extension also didn't rub my AC lines like the AEM CAI does. And the injen, isn't custom built to fit your car. You could just order a custom mandrel bent pipe w/your specifications for about $65 powdercoated any color you wanted. That would be a true, custom, intake. The comptech icebox w/comptech sri outperforms all other intakes on the market, but for the price doesn't justify the gains when money's tight. Check this out Click here for a very interesting intake showdown.

The Mugen intake is really the standard, Comptech really just copied thier design....dollar for dollar though the Copmtech is a much better deal than the Mugen obviously....I still have a hard time shelling out for that bling bling short ram of theirs..a good alternative is to go with the ITR intake arm and an K&N, what will work with the Ice Box, while another SR like the DC or AEM say, won't fit.

That Intake Showdown is pretty old...but they did a good job on it.

The main things to remember when you look at that, is that the test was done on a B16, which has a diff rod ratio than our B18b's, and thus the cylinder filling properties are somewhat different. The other issues are that engine heatsoaking probably affected the results, and there was no tuning done after each intake was installed.

All in all a good effort though....they give you the diameter for each intake which is sometimes a little difficult to find.

Another thing this shows, is that when it comes right down to it there isn't a whole lot to choose between the intakes...look at this chart put together by SuferX over at team-integra ...

People obsess over intakes waaayyy too much.
