Default Opinions On Jackets?

I need to pick up a new jacket for this year.
I'm looking at two Joe Rocket jackets.
Either the Nova Jacket, which is the cheaper of the two and features:
Rock Tex™ 330 and Rock Tex™ 600 outer shell
Dual density body armor
Dual density spine pad
Removable insulated vest liner
Variable Flow™ ventilation system
8" zipper for pant attachment
Adjustable waistband
Two-stage sleeve cuff adjuster
Reflective stripe

The other jacket is the Alter Ego, which is the more expensive of the two and features:
Meta Sport System features panels that zip off to reveal a mesh jacket, Patent Pending
Rock Tex 660 breathable outer shell
Removable waterproof inner liner
Elastic sleeve adjusters
Perforated Dual density body armor and spine pad
High density padding on shoulders, elbows and spine
Adjustable waistband
8" zipper for pant attachment
Zippers for optional Sahara Vest
Reflective safety stripe

Which do you guys think would be a better buy? Or even reccomend another jacket, I'd like a textile jacket though.

Thanks!

Textile does not protect worth ****. You might as well wear a winter coat.

Just my .02 cents

actually i've heard of some people that had a textile jacket saving them at 50mph lowside. I guess its better than nothing. I have a teknic textile jacket for the reallly really hot days.

Get a leather jacket, alpinestars makes some really good jackets. If your looking at something a little bit cheaper, how bout the teknic leather jackets?

What do you guys think of the Speedrag Stunter leather jacket, Stunter-X gloves and Freestyle pants? You can get a 40% discount if you use the "Redline Extreme" sales code. Sounds like a pretty nice deal to me.

edit: link http://www.speedrag.com/products.html

here's some pics of that full setup

I actually like my 1 piece Gerike Tribal leather race suit, I got it for 375, after breaking it in, it's really comfortable plus I can wear my cargo pants and a winter jacket (in the winter obviously) over it so nobody has to know I'm wearing leather.

Speeddrag sucks. We couldnt give it away at my store. Took forever for us to finally clear em out under cost. The only good thing textile jackets are really good for are for holding the armor pieces in place. Spend the extra cash on leather, you'll be very thankful. If you dont have much cash, look for deals online. Usually you can find a teknic leather jacket for really cheap.

Run your hand over a textile surface. W/o even considering its abrasion resistance, compare its coefficient of friction to that of leather. Now imagine sliding along at 50mph... would you like to slow down before hitting something big and hard or just keep zipping along til you meet a pole/car/wall? That said, Textile gear is very easy to find at clearance prices. I wouldn't buy textile gear but if I did, I wouldn't pay over cost for it.

What's the big thing against textile jackets?
I've heard that in a crash you won't slide as much with a textile as you would with a leather jacket. I mean I don't want to one day bite it and slide into something.

Also is textile and kevlar the same thing?

Sure Fit™ adjustable waistband
Variable Flow™ ventilation system
8" rear zipper for pant attachment
Full Flex™ windproof sleeve panels

Or the Joe Rocket Mercury leather jacket, features:

Dual density body armor
Dual density spine pad
Removable vest insulated liner
Sure Fit™ adjustable waistband
Variable Flow™ ventilation
8" zipper for pant attachment

I checked out the Alpinestars tz1, seems to be a nice piece.

So I guess it's between the Alpinestars tz1 and the two Joe Rocket jackets.

I didn't realize I wasn't being clear. lemme break it down for u like dis. u got it all wrong son, textile zips on the road like my *** on wet grass. leather wears like a knee puck, it gets scuffed and worn b/c its eating up da kinetic energy of you *** sliding. It converts it into heat due to the friction. That's why after a really good slide, the contact patch is hot like a griddle cake. Real cowhide is lightyears away from textiles in abrasion resistance. The textiles on the market are usually a kevlar weave of some sort. Now whatever the advertising/marketing may say comparing textile to leather and how its superior in real life it still falls short. It may not wear as much as leather but it just doesn't do as good a job. Leather has a little give, provides a little cushion, dissapates heat and just crashes better. The armor stays in place either under or over the leather. And leather looks much better 99% of the time. Besides, a good leather suit will survive more crashes than your machine or yourself. A textile will be lucky to survive one crash completely intact. Hope its clear as mud now

Now dat I understand son, werd
I'm going to go with the Alpinestars TZ-1 jacket. I'll be buying the spine protector for it for sure.

While I have this thread going, I think I'm going to get a new helmet this year too. Anyone have any opinions on the AGV Demon Top Vent 2 helmets?
Also how about a good pair of boots too? Alpinestars again?

Demon helmets are ok, as w/ all helmets fit is more important than brand. As for boots, for dedicated riding the 2 most popular choices are the sidi vertebra 2 and the alpinestars smx+

I guess its a matter of opinion....this sounds like a motor oil thread...

I too heard thta for street riding textile is better.....it will stop you in shorter distances, and will wear longer at a cheaper price (i actually have seen textile jackets that have been down mutiple times (I dont know why he was bragging), and yeah, it was scuffed but it was still intact)

leather, is more expensive per se, but its benefit ist htat you slide further....this makes it idea for say a track wehre you want to slide out of the way as quickly as possible, vs the street where you dont want to slid into a curb or into oncomming traffic etc...

sounds like someone is going to need to be the bitch and crash test both of them...

but any gear is better than no gear, and interms of price and comfort, those are things that you should balance against YOUR LIFE...if you think you will be safer in leather and its worth it to you to spend more, get it...

my experiances (very limited) and research has lead me to belive that each, either leatehr or textile each has its advantages and disadvantages....
]
for evey 100 people saying textile, there will be 100 saying leather, so the decision will be up to you...

'for me however, this spring, I will be buying a joe rocket alter ego. (provided it still fits right, I have gotten kinda big (in some of the wrong places)....the jacket is changeable, so it allows you to switch to mesh and take that advantage or keep the full textile...its relatively comfortable, and is the first jr that I tried on that fits my oddly shaped self comfortably without beign too big in the arms (short but with a large barrel chest)

I seem to lean toward TEKNIC. The Teknic Lightning to be specific. There is another teknic jacket with a little more armour than the Lightning and it is preferated in the front!! I will post the name later tonite, not to mention they are priced to be VERY affordable.

Hein Gericke S-Pilot (older model is the Stealth Pilot) - replaced the first one after 7 years of use and it could well have done a couple more years.

You get what you pay for.

It is also my understanding that textile will grip and also burn when sliding - not quite the desired effect.

Kevlar suits (Aerostitch) are different material than the mostly nylon based crap that is out there.

That simply is not true. Good textiles offer abrasion resistance that can equal that of leather, and is superior to kevlar and just about everything else.

If you mean a non riding winter jacket, you are sadly mistaken. Textile would be much better.

*Good* leather offers the best protection and after that it's textiles.

Cheers,
Sean
