Default axle nut removal

whatup guys...tryin to get my axle nut off on both sides and neither will budge...my motor is shot and im takin it out to drop a new one in, so its not like i can just go to a mechanics shop and get them to do it...ive already broken a 1/2 breaker bar, soaked them in pb blaster, torched it for bout 10 min, and used an air gun that has about 120 psi...the lil bastard wont even budge, im out of ideas!

either get a bigger breaker bar with a pipe extension, or a bigger impact gun.
or you could always cut it off.

I say keep working at it with the impact gun. I did that on my crank pulley until it finally gave.

bigger breaker bar with a pipe, and it'll come off ... hopefully I used a 1/2" breaker bar with a 6 foot pipe and i had problems getting it off, and it wasn't even rusted on. I had them off just about 8 months ago, then tried to take them off 2 months ago. Good luck

get a can of penetrating lube (haha...anyways) and spray it on, let it sit half an hour, spray more, let it sit, spray more.

then get a bit breaker bar or find a new best friend with good air tools. hell if they are on that tight odds are other nuts are gonna be hard to remove too - only it will be harder to get a breaker bar on them.

nah, get a 3/4 inch impact gun 1200 ft/lb. I'll be getting one soon. Crank bolts don't stand a chance anymore.

well tonight, we broke another breaker bar, used up a whole can of wd-40 and pb blaster, broke a large socket wrench, and bent a 10 ft pipe extension we had laying around...tomorrow some dude is bringing over a larger air gun, we just dont know if itll work considering his compressor sucks...but if that doesnt work, is there any other way to take a motor out without taking the tranny out?? my friend suggested putting a jack stand under the tranny and hooking the engine lift up, then slowly taking everything up so that it creates an angle so the engine could just slide out? iunno im gettin pissed off at the thing..i may just go buy a 3/4 rachet and see if thatll work, iuno im runnin out of ideas lol!

Im looking into buying a air gun. Whats a good one to get that has enough torque? I was looking at one that is 1000 ft lbs for 230$. I rather spend less though if I can get a different one.

I snapped a socket in two pieces trying to do that once... took it back to sears and got a new one free of charge I only buy pittsburgh or snap-on now.

see if you can just cut the bolt off? Seems like it'd work.

I have had this problem before. My impact gun puts out about 650 ft.lbs. I broke several breaker bars. I finally cut the nut with a ziz wheel. The parts I couldn't cut all the way I broke with a chisel and a hand sledge.

Just seperate the knuckle from the lower control arm and swing the knuckle out and remove the axle from the trans. (or intermediate shaft) and let the half-shaft hang down.

Had the same thing happen yesterday doing a GSR swap into an EJ.

What worked for us:

Can of lube
20 MINUTES with a Bernzomatic torch
1 heavy guy (that's me @195lbs.)
1/2in, breaker bar about 3 feet long.

Friend holding the socket over the nut w/ me jumping on bar.

Victory was finally achieved after we REALLY heated that nut up.

had the same problem, seperate the knuckle and take it to a shop and have the shaft pressed out, only $10.

Its only 3 bolts, all 17mm I think, Tie rod, upper control arm joint? And lower ball joint.
