I have yet to take the one apart on my new car... although I will soon... (burnt out bulb). Electrical speedometer sensor perhaps? I'll repost later if my cluster has the same sort of thing.

its the cruise control speed sensor, it sends MPH info back to the cruise control computer

Maybe it sends info to the ecu to know when to cut off fuel. The stock ECU has a "speed limit" so could that be it?

it is the VSS, i unlpugged mine and threw the VSS CEL when decelerating in gear.

I only had that w/ DPFI, w/ MPFI I threw no codes. KEEP IT, it may do something even if you get no CEL.

if this is so.. would there be any way to use that signal to power a 5th gen speedo???

It is the speed sensor amplifier on a crx cluster. on a sedan cluster it is for the cruis control indicator.

VSS, its a vehicle speed sensor, its obviously from a 90-91 because the earlier ones don't have it.

I've taken four 4th gen guage clusters apart.
an EF8
89 CRX DX
90 Civic CX
91 Civic CX
..and none of them had that. I have no clue what it is. But just to let you know, in that picture, the VSS is located on the left, right behind all that plastic behind the cable output there.

I found it on 91 DX (manual and auto) and 91 Si clusters.

w/ mechanical speedo cable, the VSS gets mounted on the speedo.

Are you talking about the gray bit? Its not the VSS. Theres a beeper inside of it I know that. I took it off my JDM ZC cluster and I was thinking it was for the JDM speed chime that goes on at 120 kph.... *shrugs* My USDM cluster didn't have it thats why I thought that.
