motor croaked, now what?
Well, it finally happened, after 151,xxx miles my engine died. Bent rod and some bent valves and currently it doesn't even run due to a dead coil
The question is now what do I do? I really love my integra and I think it could be a STS threat once it is finally set-up. I have found 2 engines locally, one 17,xxx example for $750 and a 86,xxx mile one for $350. Being a full time college student I don't actually have time to do the swap myself, I don't want to sacrifice the study time it would take, so I've been quoted ~800 to put in the engine.
So I'm looking at $1600+ to make my car healthy again, not to mention that while they are in there I'll have the replace the clutch since it has been 2 years, so that's another ~$500.
At this point I'll never be able to get anything out of the car if I try and sell it. Should I cut my losses now and try and find another set of cheap wheels to get me through college or just bite the bullet and get the 'heart transplant'?

Sorry to hear about the motor. If I was in your shoes, I would find someone on honda-tech that lived close to me and offer them $100 and some beers to come over and help with the swap. It would take you a saturday to get it done.

$800 to put another stock motor in? Ouch. Check another shop--that seems a bit steep.
Assuming $65/labor hour, they are figuring roughly 12 hours for the job. That's too much, in both cases.

Carl,
You can spend the money on a rusty, scary interior, teg that won you the STS title, or you move on to your asperations of stock class with a different car. You have talked about what you want to do, and I think you know what you should do. After you graduate you will have plenty of time, and money, to have your toys.
However, if you keep the teg, get the $350 motor (although for $750 and only 17,000 miles seems like a deal), call PFM and get them to help. Or call Bill's automotive in Valley Park. He won't screw you around.
So you're looking at something like $2000 to get it back in good running shape (I'm including the clutch in that number). I would be surprised if you couldn't turn around and sell a decent running Integra for at least $2000. Another thing to consider is: would you be able to buy another car that would be in as good shape as your current car for $2000?
I've had a lot of used cars, and those are the kinds of questions that I ask myself when I'm deciding whether to fix it and keep it or move on.

Todd00-
that price did seem kinda high, although that was the only shop i got a quote from. on monday I'm gonna call around and see if I can get a lower price.
MattG-
I want a newer car (read: car with a warranty) soo bad right now, but I don't think that's in the cards for me for another few years. at least not until I finish college.
ulitmately it is gonna be my pops decision since the car is in his name. he already said we're gonna put a new motor in, he's just not liking the $800 quote for installing it.
Agent Smith-
probably couldn't find a used car for $2000 that I would be happy with. there was a 89 Si on sccaforums, but it sold the day I was gonna call about it.

my opinion is this.
If you want to be nationally competitive in STS give up the integra idea. With working with a budget its not going to happen. I faced the same thing trying to make my 00 civic si fast. It could work but it wasn't going to be streetable, comfortable or cheap.
If you want somethign thats going to be nice, keep your integra. The 89 si will be more fun but its not nearly as nice as your integra can be. The good thing about these cars is that you can make them fast very CHEAP. I have about 4k in mine and its almost completely built.
Another idea is you could get the new motor in the integra. sell all the parts off of it and keep it as your street car, then use that money to save up for an 89 si. Thats what I did and now i have a comfortable car to daily drive and a car to race. It does cost quite a bit more. But you could even keep the 89 si stock and have fun with it. To give you an idea my 89 si completely stock with good tires was faster than my decently prepared 00 si.

eh, I'd rather not be status quo and run an EF Si in STS, the idea behind me getting the Si was for me to run in HS.
and i'll take my chances in the integra vs 89 Si's at a ProSolo. those civics don't weigh that much more than my car, but they are down 40+ hp.

Damn, I was sooo wanting to get rid of you in STS. Oh, well it'll give the class some competition. Call around, you can probably find a cheaper place to do the install, especially if its the same engine, OBD, etc. Give Bill's a call, and try Keith's shop. I know Joe, the alignment guy, at Keiths did a swap in his civic.

Umm, I dunno about that
89 Si STS = ~2050 lbs and 115hp @ the wheels
94 RS Integra STS = ~2350 and 130hp @ the wheels
Both on 205 tires...
I like Ryan's idea. Fix the teg and return it to stock and use the extra money to buy a dedicated STS car. Or, build your teg and buy an old Accord auto or something as a daily beater.

all i gotta say is torque. and those I certainly have more torque than the civics, and who said i'd be on a 205?
and who is to say that 145-150 whp isn't out of reach for my motor?

Ok, I'll bite
With the revised fender liner rule, you'll be on a 205--trust me. The only other options are a 215/16 or a 225/15, but the 225/15 choices are no wider than the 205 Azenis and the 215/16 Azenis' minor, minor width increase is not worth the gearing hit.
145-150 @ the wheels with a B18b? Good luck with STS mods IMO. Maybe 140, but that would be on the top end from what I've seen as far as B18b dynos go, and many of those would not be STS legal.
But I'd love to see someone try a 90-01 Integra in STS. I think they could do better than most folks think. Maybe not win--but they would certainly hold their own.

I say 150 whp is out of reach for your motor Carl, so that's who, and the d16's have less torque but surprisingly similar torque curves to a B18b, so the torque and hp/weight is better everywhere.
I told you we would have been outdriving anyone we beat this year, not out-car-ing them, and that'll continue to be true even if you max out the Integra.
That said, you shouldn't get rid of it.

my secrets are just that, secrets
in reality I'm on a shoe-string budget until i finish school so for the next 3 years I'll have a half-prepped STS car, spending most of my money keeping the car in brakes, tires, and entry fees.
so no real threat from my car in 2004, just a threat that i'll eventually learn how to drive

What's your guesstimate for a STS legal RS? Stock Curb Weight is : 2529 lbs
With full STS mods, it should be under 2400lbs, easily.

depending on what comes with the replaacement motor, there may be a LOT of time spent swapping over sensors, accessories, etc so anywhere between 300 and 800 is fair unless you tell us everything about the potential swap....
you should get a replacement motor!
I cant believe theres nobody around you who'd do the swap for almost nothing! or a case of beer or something like that!
Its too bad you're not in upstate NY, I'd do it for you for free, I'm hella bored
