Short Shifter Brand?
What are the variables that make some short shifters better then others?
Or is there really a difference?
Because i might just buy one from this kid i know; its brand new but he said its shitty- Does it matter?
Thanks. -Steve

Cheap Short Shifter is made out of cheap materials, Which mean it will break. You should spend money on buying skunk2 (heard good thing about it and it made of steel dual bend, Order one myself) and Neuspeed shifter is also good or better.
Most aftermarket short shifters are crap. I know several people who've broken their DC Sports shifters under hard shifts. I snapped a Tenzo shifter when I had my Civic. You really don't even need to be putting that much muscle into it to break one. They're made of aluminum, it's stiff and doesn't give under stress. OEM shifters are made of steel I believe. I honestly ditched my short shifter in favor of the stock one. Honda has it down in the shifter department, I def feel that they have some of the best precision feel to them.

. I took out the skunk2 ss because it hanged lower than stock and it was rubbing against my resonator on my catback, so depending on what exhaust setup you got i would and wouldn't go skunk2.

The mis-information some of you people have in your heads is mind-boggling.
Cheap shifter means cheap materieals... but they're still metal. Metal is metal, I've been running a cheapo Ractive shifter for 3 years. If you abuse the shifter, it will break. There's a difference between shifting hard and shifting quickly.
One more thing, how do you people justify these mistruths about short shifters? For example: How does a shorter throw = scratching synchros or breaking gears?

i bought the mackin one from a shop the other day.. and i put it on today, but the bottom of it, instead of a T... it comes with little rubber bushings, so i put those on and put the bolt back through... but now it's still hella loose, like left to right, in gear and out of gear... but is shifts fine... do i need to get diff bushings or something, cause it just doesn't seem right
There is no doubt that A)cheap shifters will break! and B)all short throws will make your tranny grind after a while. That is unless you shift slow enough to let the synchros work.

I think the general concensus is that aluminum shifters aren't as strong as steel shifters like Skunk2 and Neuspeed. The aluminum shifters have been known to break/crack on people. (do a search and you should find the probs) Although I've had my cheapo aluminum shifter for going on 4 years and a handful of autox and road racing events during that time. If I ever get a new shifter it will be the Skunk2.
But I do agree that a lot of the breakings have to do with the way people shift. Don't shift like on FNF! haha! Smooth, precise throws. And a lot of the "scratching" or "grinding" have to do with getting used to the shorter throws. Do I grind my gears? Yes, once in a blue moon. But it's due to driver error, not the shifter.
And there is a huge difference in throws from stock to aftermarket. I used to think the GSR throws were short but after I bought my cheapo shifter, there was a huge difference.

Thanks alot guys; all great comments. Now I am faced with deciding if I still even want a short throw hahaa.
