Default Seriously considering building an other racecar (All-Motor) Help me brainstorm

Right now we're (my Bf/mad scientist and I) are having a serious discussion about building an All-Motor race car (most likely a CRX) since it's somewhat cheaper to build than a Hot Rod/Pro FWD car. I need some opinions on certain matters (motor builders mostly and suspension choice) and i'd like your advice. BTW- This would be a true racecar, never to see the streets

Is there an All-Motor engine builder who stands out from the rest?

Head builder/porter (personally i'm partial to Dave at Head Games, but nothings in stone).)

Suspension? Is a set-up such as the Penske system overkill?

Would an aftermarket gearset be wise? Or is it just the FD that needs to be addressed?

And is a solid axle worth the money? Like the one Mark Williams or Kens Kustom Chassis sell.

And finally, are built auto's any good? Because Nelson Hoyos (Pro FWD) runs an auto and was nearly unbeaten in 2003, but he runs the GM auto and from what i've gathered they are considerably stronger than the Honda/Acura trans.

Also, i'd like a price range for running an All-Motor car all season. And the cost of building and maintaining a car like this.

Any help is appreciated

Here you go. Before I answer this just keep in mind that these are opinions and only opinions. I have been involved in ALL MOTOR for about 9-10 years.

As far as engine builders go. Thats a hard one there are many out there and everybody thinks they have the best one. Is there one that better than the next. I would say no. I would just check around talk to some of the better shops and decide for yourself.

For head porter's the samething goes for them.

You will need a custom gear box with gear ratios that match your setup.

The solid rear axels are good for some real weight savings but if you want some weight of the car back half it.

Forget the auto trans stuff. It works on turbo cars because they have enough power than they can afford to give up the power that an auto trans takes away. I Just look at the all motor Saturn it hard the power but *** soon as it launched you could just hear it bog trying to push through that trans.

Now for the cost of the car and the sason. It might be cheaper to run an all motor car but don't think its cheap. To build a car that will be competitive i would say that you'll need 40 or 50,000. To run it for a season is a hard one. If you mean to run a series for a year I would say $12,000+ depending on where you live and where you go. You will also need a tow vehicle and a trailer it willl be your home away from home so get as nice a one that you can afford.

Good luck if you do it. It's alot of fun ween things go right but when it doesn't it can really suck. When I watched our car hit the wall on the top end last year it really sucked.

If you are power hungry (greedy) and want to go really really fast, then your best bet is to go turbo. I mean, it's nice to build an all-motor track car, but it's really hard to break any more records nowadays, especially with a CRX. Since you are running drag slicks anyway (meaning traction is not a problem), then there's another reason to go boost.
In addition, you have to either tune your car yourself, or you have to find a really really good engine tuner to extract any impressive power from an all-motor engine.

GTPcrew: I have seen your car around my way (MIR and VMP) and your advice is music to my ears. Also, I completely understand about the auto tranny, I didn't take into consideration the power it take to make an auto usefull (even though we run an auto on our racecar ). Thanks you for all your assistance and I wish you good luck this season (just beat Norris ).

green_GSR: I have the turbo thing covered (1000+whp Supra). I was mearly trying my hand at something more difficult than a "Turbo car".

jasonp: I'll Pm you Nice car BTW
