also what company offers "upgraded" keepers
a keeper is a keeper

maybe you had a broken valve or your cams were too aggressive
cough cough toda spec d's cough

there could have been hundreds if not thousands
of reasins why you dropped a valve. dont just go and
blame any certain part for the failure. maybe it was installers error
or just plain ole factory defect.

From what I was told the keepers pulled throught the retainer and dropped the valve. This isn't a rule written in stone ,but it is always better to use complimentary parts by the same company that were made to work together.

well, I didn't say this was always the case but this does happen.
How do I know? I do this for a living, and it's my job and apart of my job would be to figure out what went wrong for this to happen. This head came off of a customers Hot Rod (nhra) car and was one of the back-ups that had nothing more than a valve job and valve train upgrade of Ti retainers and aftermarket springs.

Most of the Hot Rod class runs a factory cam, so piston to valve clearance is not a issue.

Valves don't just break. At least not that I have seen.

Ferrea makes a forged keeper, not a stamped steel one like factory, a keeper is not just a keeper.

And as Ed said, what happened hear is the valve pulled through the retainer while on the 2-step. As you can see, factory valves do not bend-they break so we have the damage shown.
Again I am not saying this is always the case with Ti retainers, and not all are created equal . Your right, not a lot of people change their keepers when installing there Ti retainers I would say mainly because they don't have the option to because there is only one company that makes them and they only work with their retainer.
I don't want to freak you guys out, but I know I have heard about this a few times on H-T and had a head at the shop to show some carnage. If you look at the top of my post I said this is what COULD happen, not what's GOING to.

I have a head that also had a similar failure, the retainer. Head looks almost identical in the combustion chamber area.

Dave is there a way to make a keeper to function with stock and aftermarket valves with the ti retainer? or is the keeper grove on factory valves radiused to much to duplicate on aftermarket valves?

That looks identicle to a GSR I worked on, the problem on his was that he was chipped with no rev limiter. I'm guessing that the piston tapped the valve and knocked the keeper off. What a mess, damaged head, hole in piston, and cracked sleeves. As we all know it doesn't take much of a hit on the retainer to make the keeper jump off
