Default zc twin cam or sohc vtec u be the judge

alright guys i have a friend of mine that is gonna go either twin cam zc or sohc vtec

they are both around 130 hp to the motor

the question is which would be the better choice.

it will be a daily driver and he will occasionally drag it and maybe do a lil bit of circuit racing on track days.

will the sohc vtec fall into the EF Si chassis or will he need mounts ?

i can also get his ecu chipped if he goes sohc vtec for cheap

what do u guys think will be the better choice and why u think this way.

please don't say b , h or even k - series as he doesn't have that much money

It basically comes down to prefferance. I would go with the D16Z6

I feel there is a better After market for the Z6 Plus newer is usually more reliable.

as far as your tech questions, the z6 and the zc will both bolt up in his engine bay. it does come down to his choice, the zc is older but it would be easier to wire, the z6 is newer and although it drops right in you would have to either covert to obd1 or run a modified obd0 e.i distributor fitment, vtec wiring, thermo sensor relocation...

i got the z6

I would go with the Z6 since it is a less outdated motor, but so are both of them. I'd think about investing the money into the stock motor before I'd think about doing a swap to another d-series.

I have the Z6 in my 89 Si. I love its decent power and availability of aftermarket parts. But if you ask some in here they would say neither and go with mildly built A6 for the same money considering he has an Si already but unless he has an HF he is gonna have to convert to MPFI anyhow.

very good point

id say talk to exospeed here on ht and get urself a set of cams and some headwork done and your prolly above and beyond a stock z6 or zc right there.......... if the si motor needs a rebuild then pick up a nice piston/rod combo and u would have urself a purty quick a6...........

hmm... well my gut is to say the ZC.. becuase my bro had it in his 4-door ef, and i had a z6 in my crx with all the same mods... and his felt more powerfull when i drove his then mine. felt better on the low and mid. but i would probably say the z6 because of the aftermarket support. also when u go to honda for something u can tell them exactly wut u need, unlike with the ZC you'd have to guess and wouldnt really know. my bro learned the hard way (wrong sized bearings on a rebuild and it seized). but thats just my 0.02. good luck choosing

I use to be zc very good motor just drop in and go but watch out if you start going big cams and what not mines was an every day driver with head work big cams cam gears throttle body and ecu only down fall it used to eat distributors for lunch . fastest it ran on slicks was 13.7 so if you can deal with the distrib problems it would be worth it.

D16Y8. It was faster than 90 percent of the ZC's I raced, with similar mods.

Dimensions are the same bore and stroke
The Design from the DOHC ZC(1984ish) is 7 yrs older than Z6 (1991ish)
That's not to say that the DOHC is crap because it's not
For all D series, from what BISI said, the DX/Si non vtec head 88-91 flows best
The DOHC ZC has the strongest rods and pistons biggest valvse and from what TheOldOne says has the largest ports
The SOHC VTEC had variable intake timing
