Finding a B18C1 Block-Need Advice
I tried looking in the search for a topic similar to this one but nothing came up. Maybe I am "search challenged" or something, but I still need to ask this and get the advice/suggestions of some members of this forum so here it goes.
Currently, I am really thinking hard on the idea of taking the B16 bottom end out of my Si and replacing it with a B18C1 bottom end. I want to keep it stock for the most part with the exception of going with CTR pistons for the ever popular "Poor Man's Type-R". I tried purusing the web for blocks but didn't turn up much. Junkyards, internet shops, auctions=nada. This started me thinking after finding Exospeed's website if I should just buy a brand spanking new block and send it to them to build up the way I want. Is that a real viable option? How much would I expect to pay for say a B18C1 block straight from Acura or DART vs. finding a used one? Would it actually be safer and better for me to just pick up a DART or OEM Acura block? If I go the DART route, would I need to get a crank, oil pan, windage tray, etc. with it or does it already come with all of that minus pistons and rods? I would like to keep the total cost of building this bottom end to $3000 or less. If I go with Exospeed's build I could definitely do it. Just need help to point me in the right direction. Thanks.
EDIT: Let me know if my price range is realistic as well. Thanks again.

If you want to keep it low key..do the B18c bottom end...great motor..get some cams though...it will help with the top end. It worked great for me...13 second motor daily driven..all factory honda-parts..good luck mang!
Thanks for the reply. I already have some cams. Getting them installed in a few weeks-Skunk2 Stage 2s w/ Skunk2 valvesprings/Ti retainers. Picking up some Skunk2 cam gears and a Mugen 2-ply headgasket next week. Then I need a ECU for my Hondata s100 and I plan on having all of that installed and tuned up. After that, I plan on just focusing on finding a block and saving up for the build. Hopefully by the end of summer at the earliest but I'm flexable. I need to find a block first so that is my first step. Let me know if I am going in the right direction with a brand new one and what I will probably need for it, etc, etc. Thanks again. Peace.
If you plan to buy a brand new block...even though its not necessary..you'll need all the internals...by lucky chance..i do have them..hahah..but if you buy a used short block..tear it down and send the parts out to a machine shop. If you're getting new pistons, have them balanced along with the rods, crank, clutch and flywheel. Maybe even get the rods shot peened. Have the crank micropolished as well. And if it's a must, change the water pump and oil pump, not really necessary, but it's a good idea. Make sure all the bearing are in good shape and just have fun with it.

Happen to know where I can find one? What can I expect to pay and what is considered overpriced for one? And since I plan on having it rebuilt before I put it into my car, does it really matter what condition it is in or are their still certain things I should pay attention to? Thanks for the help.

GSR blocks are not that hard to find. You can find them in the H-T classifieds every day. Just use the search function-otherwise you will have to browse about 20 pages of ads to find what you are looking for. Some guys want $700-$1000 for a GSR short block. But if you are patient, you can find one at a reasonable price ($300-$500). Make sure to get the main caps with the block, or it is useless.

Thanks for the help all. I tried purusing the Parts Trader and seemingly every auto salvage website on the web myself to no such luck. I might need to look at the Honda-Tech classifieds a little closer. If I can find a B18C1 short block in the $300-$500 range, I'll probably jump on it. Realistically, it'll probably be a bit before I can do this as I just picked up my cams and the other stuff listed below and was wanting to pay off some credit card debt and my wife's student loans before I jump back into my car. This is definitely a good starting point for me and helped me out tremendously. Thanks for the help again all.
