Real Life people using CTR pistons in california
Ok, ok, im stil debating whether or not to go with jdm itrs or ctrs for my b17 build. Im worried about whether or not my motor will be fine with 91 california gas. Id like to hear from people in california who actually are running these pistons, what their setup is, any tuning done, and any problems? Also, does anyone know the compression of ctrs vs jsm itrs with a pr3 head?
thanks

you really think ctrs wont pass smog My planned setup is stock exhaust, aem intake, aebs manifold, ctr cams, ctr pistons, stock header.. i figured it will pass ca smog
I have ctr pistons, with mugen headgasket on my b16. the only other mods I have is an apex n1 full cat, and an aem cold air intake..I haven't done any tuning what so ever becuase I have no cams or cam gears or vafc to tune it and it's running fine on 91..
you think its running fine? or you know its running fine? you might be running lean as hell. id get that setup tuned asap. especially if running 91 octane.

well.. I don't have a vafc or anything to tune it..no cams no cam gears or anything so what exactly would I be tuning?
i had jdm itr pistons in my jdm b18c with a spoon head gasket at about 11.6:1 running on 93 oct. untuned it ran perfect, it ran a 14.5 with stock exhaust with a full interior and full tank of gas.
All the guys i know in cali running CTR's insisted on running race gas ALWAYS..or at least pump with octane boost. these are guys who know their ****..well known racers..that was in a b18.

Interesting, because a buddy of mine has a 12:1 LSV on 91 and guess what, it runs perfect. Tuning is very important pal...

It's funny...
I put together a B17 engine w/CTR pistons (dubbed "Blacksheep") back in late '98 just to prove it could be done to people on the old HondaHybrid forum who were too scared to try out CTR pistons. It was the best motor I ever had, until my car got stolen.
It ran just fine on 91 octane and I daily drove the car everyday.
These were the specs on it:
- rebuilt B17 block w/standard bore CTR pistons
- 89 B16A head w/stock headgasket, ITR v.springs & Portflow Ti retainers
- Spoon intake cam, ITR exhaust cam, Spoon sprockets
- ITR intake manifold & TB
- 97 JDM ITR exhaust manifold mated to 2.5 exhaust piping & resonated str8 pipe
- GSR injectors & Fuel pump
- Mugen chipped P28 ecu
- Ran a Fields SFC for a while, then changes over to an Apexi VAFC
This setup tuned & dyno'd: 174whp & 124ft lbs of torque
(tuned by Oshimo)
dyno sheet here: http://www.ff-squad.com/ffs/ka...7.jpg
With the mugen program, it ran too rich under 4000rpm, had to lean it out, but up top, had to enrichen the fuel more after 7500rpm.
Intake cam was left @ zero degrees, exhaust cam retarded 2 degrees.
I miss that motor
PS: Don't forget to have the B17 rod shaved down on either side, around the wrist pin area, in order for the CTR piston to fit on the rod!

ctr pistons will pass smog!!! As long you know what you doing and make sure their's no evap leak or check engine light and have a brand new cat converter, have your b17 ecu you'll be fine trust me I'm done it b4!!!!
b18b1 block and crank
je pistons 13.5
crower rods
ctr cams
itr street head/ported manifold
act clutch/flywheel
msd sci
msd spark plugs wire
bosch irodium plugs
p28 ecu
tractions bar
on a gutted daily driven dc2
+ good driver = 12.08 sec

YES YES!
Only B16 & B17 rods need this mod if using ANY US or JDM B-series Type-R piston(s).

I have CTR pistons, and mine did not like 91 , I use 94....I have hondata and 550cc injectors.
My tuner is excellent has 2 700+ hp hondas.
so I don't know how the hellyou guys are doing itunless it is in a b16 where the comp is much lower than in a lsvtec.
cali weather is much different than Ottawa weather.....

i have to start running a bit of race gas on my LSV... CTR pistons are a little to crazy for 91, untuned of course. but dont let me discourage you, im still trying to get rid of my knocking
my future setup
95 gsr
ctr std pistons
portflow pnp b16a head
skunk2 stage2 cams
skunk2 valvespring and ti retainer
smsp header
hondata
b16a tranny w/jdm itr fd and quaife lsd
i have the block and pistons in already.....im hopefully gonna tune it a lot right after breakin period.....im hoping i should be ok with 91 octane, what do you guys think?any input on this setup?

CTR pistons and 91 octane not a good match. I'd go with P73s or if you want more compression P30s.
