All 1.6L D-series engines from Japan are stamped "ZC." There are DOHC non-VTEC, SOHC non-VTEC, and SOHC VTEC ZCs.
The engine you saw was a DOHC ZC, which has a valve cover that looks somewhat similar to a B18A valve cover (there are a few differences though). You cannot use a B-series head on a D-series block, they are not interchangeable.

ZCs came in many, many different cars in Japan, including 3rd, 4th, and 5th-gen Civics, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-gen CRXes, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-gen Integras. Some were dual-carbureted and some were multi-port fuel-injected. As I mentioned before, there are DOHC non-VTEC, SOHC non-VTEC, and SOHC VTEC ZCs.
No engine sold in the United States was ever stamped "ZC." Our 1.6L D-series engines were all stamped as "D16 _ _."
Check here for more ZC info.
