check engine, 1 blink (oxygen sensor/content)

check engine, 1 blink (oxygen sensor/content)
i've got a 1989 4dr sedan with a 1.5l sohc
before the check engine light would come on randomly after driving it for more than 30 minutes at a time
it had a blown head gasket and i gutted a thermostat to allow water to flow freely to prevent the overheating..
well.. i've replaced the head gasket and thermostat.. it's now actually getting up to temp and out of loopback mode.. the oxygen sensor is also new.
i still get the check engine and it blinks once telling me there is something wrong with the sensor..
what could it be? any ideas i haven't tried?
