I heard that advancin the ignition timin to 18 degrees will help your car run faster like givin it more horsepower. Is this true??? Is it safe to do so or leave it at 16 BTDC??? What are the pros and cons of doin this???? I know I will need to run higher octane gas 91+ anywayz my 01 Integra Gsr i'm runin is already 91 octane so that won't be a problem. Is this little simple mod worth it??? Thanks for all the feedback. How about on a 94 Ex Civic would it be the same?
not worth it....

Thats why a gsr has a knock sensor. It will pull timing once the engine detonates. Not harming your engine. Learn before u speak. LS/RS/GS do not come equiped with a knock sensor. And 18 degrees is withing spec. 16 +-2.

18deg will not give you detonation. It's within stock specs. It's very worth it since it's a free mod.
I've been running 18 deg. on my teg for a while now, not even a hint of detonation. We do get 93 octane in NJ though...

18degrees is still within factory spec, so there shouldn't be any problem if your car is stock compression!!
Give it a try, it should give you a bit more low end power!!

i have 18 degrees advanced timing also....and i love it because its free !!...but i will be forced to retard the timing once i get my turbo.....maybe to 15 degrees...

Ask any mechanic... advancing stock timing beyond what is necessary and over time (truly, it will take time) the engine with advanced timing will run into reliability issues eventually.... in my opinion, if you want to keep your car for a long period of time and not throw it out like a bit*h in a few years.... a few Hp from a 'free' upgrade is not really worth it. Plus premium ain't cheep....

Hmmmmm I hear some of you sayin not to and some sayin its good. So are there any pros and cons to this?? I would really like to know whats everyone opinions also. Is it really safe to do so?? Is this really worth it?? Since its freeeeee and easy. Thanks for the response.
Well, I run 94 octane all day everyday, so 18 degree of timing shouldn't be a problem for me. I did feel gain in mid-range for sure. And no problem to my engine with the advanced timing so far.
I too can say that I've been running at 18 degrees for probably the last three years. Absolutely no problems on my 4 year old car.
To say that this is going to "ruin your engine in the long run" is phooey. It's within factory specs, meaning some cars come from the factory set to 18 degrees. Turning up the timing to the max spec isn't going to cause any more wear on an engine than putting on an intake or taking it to redline every day. And...if you've got a GSR, you should be putting Premium in the tank anyway.

I have my timing at 18 for 6 months now. No detonation , I do run 93 octane, THe only thing Jersey is good for! I felt a little power gain in mid range also, not much, but not bad for 15 minutes of work.
sounds good guys.......I run Sunoco 94 Octane all day eveyday too and I have one question for you guys: How do you do it??????? The physical process of advancing the timing 18 degrees??
BTW: here's another question: Do you think that this would be safe when I'm spraying my 75 shot of N2O?
?

Damn you guyz with high octane damn CA 91
Any pros and cons to this though?? Safe and worth it??? Thanks.

Well, the cost of this mod is you having to buy a timing light.
The owner's manual says 91 octane, the service manual says 16 +/- 2 degrees btdc. So 91 octane at 18 degrees btdc is fine. You guys with higher octane may be able to run even more ignition advance.
Don't quote me on this part, but I believe that ZEX tells you to retard the timing a bit if you're running anything more than a 55 shot.

how much are timing guns? or could i rent them from an auto shop???
I suppose you could rent one from somewhere... but they'd probably charge you $10 for the trouble. $30 is cheap enough, isn't it?
yep it's safe and within spec. I know people who advance the timing to max on a GS-R without problems, no knock on a hot summer day w/ full load (but not all GS-R's can handle more than 18). Bottom line, don't worry about 18 degrees.
