F20B vs. B series.
Alright, here is where I stand. I used to own a 4th gen, with a b20/vtec in it. I had the opportunity to go with a F20B. Not wanting to hack up the 4th gen chassis, I sold that, and picked up a 5th gen, with a b16 in it. Now, as I get closer to obtaining the F20B, I am starting to get a little gun shy of the motor. I work at a speed shop, and the owner has the f20 in his hatch. He needs to ditch this, to go with a h22a, so he can achive his goal of nines. Anyways, he will trade his motor/tranny harness setup, for my motor tranny setup. I just need to purchase mounts, and axles. I know the motor runs strong, and I have performed a compression and leak down check on the motor, so I am not concerned that it is bad.
My problem is, I am not familiar with the f/h series motors. I believe it is great opportunity to grab a F20, for almost free. But again, have been stuck on b series, and have never really messed with the h and f's.
If you were put in this position, would you go with the trade? Or stick to what you know?

F20B is a really nice High revving motor. The crank and rods are really strong compared to most of the production engines...it can really take a beating. It already has type-s cams and 11:1 compression.
A set of skunk2 cams in there and a final drive and it will haul ***. the user f20Bcivic had an F20B in a hatch so you could ask him what he thinks of it.
Remember the F20B is where the F20C came from, it was the testbed for the S2000 design.

too small of bore.. not enough stroke.. do a search this subject was talked about on another thread... b20vtec will out run a f20b.. ill take a 85 bore 89mm stroke motor over 85bore by 87 stroke any day of the week.

F20B is 88mm stroke by the way...
but I would probably say the B20/VTEC is a lighter motor.

I have read every thread that came up with F20B as the search subject.

As for weight goes, I have only been able to find that the f20/h22 weighs in at 75lbs more than a b18c? Is that accurate? How about the tranny?

I heard he took everything apart so he could go towards turbo. I've seen him at the tracks awhile with his old setup. It was a Civic Hatchback w/ F20B (Stock Block, Upgraded Valvetrain and JUN3 Cams). With drag radials, he was hitting low 13s. With slicks, he's easily into the 12s.

if your really down for the f20b block because you want a motor you can rev high and still have good longevity... resleeve it and go 89mm bore. and use a h22a head. the valves are smaller diameter then a h22a.. and get some nice cams..
Well, the motor was dropped in my hatch, using a fatty turbo head gasket, since the wrong head gasket was ordered.
Right now, I am very dis-satisfied with the motor, and almost regret going this route.

What were you not sastified with? Was it with the performance? Did get a chance to ride in his car when he had the f20b? I'm just curious.

the f20b cams ARE NOT TYPE S CAMS
but there is an F20b being built right now that will give hte final word as to if they are worth it or not...
but, if you have a civic/integra/crx go with a b-series
if you have an accord/prelude go wiht an f20b

are you sure, that the f20b cams aren't type s cams? It has been written on here many times that they are. However I don't have one or ever measured. Maybe he measureed the cams from the f20a? the auto one is supposedly weaker.
Also why a turbo head gasket? wouldn't you want something a little thinner, or stock to keep the 11:1 compression?

will the mounts for an h22 swap into an EF work for a f20b? if you can swap this motor in and put the h22 head on it then it sounds like its worth it. bore it out to 89mm and get a crank that would give u a 95 mm stroke. hell if there is an adapter plate for a b-series tranny then that would be even sweeter.
But to answer the original post...i would say think out of the box and be different. but the bottom line is your wallet.

Also, the H22A head will not work. The F20 is MUCH more closely related to the K-series than the H-series.

what are you talking about...... we are NOT talking about the f20c s2000 motor.
the f20b is close to an h22, the head will bolt up

Slower than expected.
Riding in the car that the motor was pulled from, really wouldnt allow me to compare. The car weighed next to nothing.
