Default engine revs without touching gas

hi, my stock 88 crx si will start to rev between idle and 3000 rpms. it is completely random since it happens maybe once every 3 days. it goes on for about 15 secs and then goes back to normal. also my CEL (havent checked code yet) comes on once my car heats up but it has yet to rev up while the CEL is on. any info will be appreciated.......thanks

does the light reset when you turn off the car?
might be the o2 sensor...
try the manual under fuel and emissions,it will tell you how to diagnose: http://icelord.net/honda/repai...anual/

yes the light does reset everytime the car cools down. But if it was the o2 sensor why would it be so random? thanks for the advice........

HIC or IAC. They seem to **** up lots in cold temperatures, and people in the dirty souf and socal never have problems. There is two of them working in tandem, one under the throttle body and one on the back of the manifold. That'd be my guess. (one of mine is fucked BTW, car revs and drops after its warmed up)
