Adding ballast to seat
I am currently using a Sparco Rev seat in my STS Prelude. As per SCCA, the seat (not including brackets) must weigh more than 15lbs. Well my seat weights 12.5lbs. Thus to prevent someone from protesting me for a mere 2.5lb (and I know someone will eventually do it) I need to weigh the seat down a little. Has anyone done this already or have any suggestions? Right now im thinking of getting a 2lb steel plate and fiberglassing it to the bottom of the seat. TIA
I thought seats had to be reclineable for STS.

The Rev isn't reclineable.

Yup.
I don't know of any reclinable seats that weigh under 15lbs.

old rules, they don't count anymore. According to Moutons you can't hcange motor mounts either...
The new rule is any seat that meets the minimum weight.

There's a thread about this on http://www.sccaforums.com . The unofficial opinion of one of the powers-that-be is that any ballast has to be permanently affixed, so you would have to fiberglass it on.
I'd be surprised if someone protested you since the Prelude isn't really a competitive car in STS. Or anywhere else for that matter.

Yes fixed back seats are now legal. I now have an evo2 in my car. I think it weights something like 17lb so I dont have to worry about ballasts.
To get it up to weight I would use stick on wheel weights. Thats what I was planning on using if I got a seat that was less than 15 lb. And its not a valid protest if its not permanently affixed because the fabric for the sparco seats aren't even permanently on there.
I guess thats another stupid protest argument going on in the STS rules breakdown.

Yes it is a very dumb rule. I cant run an Evo2 because im too skinny so i get penalized by not being able to run a fixed back seat???? Its crap if you ask me.
And yes someone around here would protest me. I am one of the top three competitors in STS in the state right now...and all three of us drive preludes. But yes I know that EF civic Si's are the dominator in the class. But i am definately in a position to have someone want to protest me.
I think what I'll end up doing is buying some dymanat or some form of acoustic damper and stick some of that to the bottom of the seat, since it will be removable later in the event that i go w2w. I dont plan on going to anything larger than a statewide autox, so ill probrably be ok fudging the rules for now.
I was jsut wondering if anyone had actually DONE this already....

adding weight to the seat, even if its not permanently attached is legal. You've just customized your seat to make it >15 lb. There is no wording in the rules you can't have custom seats or that they have to be 15 lb the way they are purchased.

Cool, nice driving
. Since I started autocrossing mine I always thought the Prelude was a bit overlooked because of the numbers, somewhat boosted by the fact that my Evo instructors both commented on how well the car drove. But it seems everywhere the Prelude can go, so can the Type R, which is just too damn light. In any case, I have fun driving mine and maybe the day I can afford to prep it to the rules maybe be a good contender for STX (I can't imagine how well the car would handle with a Quaife :drool
That thread ryan12321 posted was the one I was talking about

Ryan,
You should say "In my opinion" for that statement above. Not everyone agrees on your interpretation.

yeah, its just an opinion. I figured everybody would know I'm not the official rulemaker.

dang, you'll get protested at a regional event for a seat that is underweight? that's some pretty intense competition.

ps. i know that there are like 72 autocross clubs in cali, but doesn't a kogan run with one of the LA ones? he would have been driving art's black sentra.

In southern Calif, there are basically 2 regions, Cal Club (Los Angeles) and SDR (San Diego). However, there are "clubs" within each region to form the region. Why do we do that? I don't know, it has been like this way before I started auto-x'ing in 98.
Matt Kogan is actually in SD, but he often runs in LA as well. He's not co-driving Art's Sentra this year though, but rather co-driving an ESP Dakota. See his results from the AZ NT?
