hi. I was just curious about a car detenating.
I was wondering if all detenation is a loud "kaboom" sound or can some detenation be silent.
Insight would be greatly appreciated.

not alway a loud boom, when my freinds b16 blew you just here what sounds like pistions being tossed around in a washing machine, then smoke poured out the hood. some detonation will be different then others, esp if the rod comes out the block then im sure it will be a noticable "BOOM"

you can test it by loading the car while driving around instead of driving in first gear get up to speed and then put it like in 4th gear and if the car jerks and cant pull through when you push the gas down then it's detonation also if you snap the throttle ( not good so dont do that alot ok!) and you hear it like something sound like a loud spark that's detoantion.

If your car is detonating, you will hear it by putting it in 4th or 5th at a low speed and giving it lots of throttle. You will be able to hear it then. It will be a foreign ticking/metallic knocking sound occuring many times (some people think its just one sound).

 

will a car detonate only under load? i heard some noise today while i was driving, (freshly put in ls/vtec) and it sounded like something was loose, rattling, so when i pulled into my driveway i revved it in neutral, and nothing...

Not only under load, but if its not tuned right, it usually will detonate under load.

 

its nothing too crazy, around11:1 compression stock b series injectors on 91 octane.... what do you think?

Have you done your timing with a timing gun? What is it set at? What chip are you running? What spark plugs are you running?

 

i did the timing with a gun, yes. im running a pr4 ecu (for now cuz my p28 took a dump) with vafc and autolite platinum plugs

 

you shorted the service connector when setting the timing?

 

no the chipped ecu i was planning on using wont let me pull codes and rev limits @ 3k.
The pr4 runs decent, i pulled codes on the first try, but under load, at a low rpm in fifth gear, im gettin some sort of noise...

 

a loud ticking sound

 

does it occur repeatedly, like a rattle, or more sporadically (sp) like a motor when its missing...

 

To me it sounds like marbles in the induction system under load, almost a metallic sound.
