Default Radiator Coolant

I will be going to VIR this Feb and was thinking that the temps may be too low for straight water. Is it illegal to run coolant on the track? At worst case scenario, I can run coolant for the trip down and then drain and replace with water at the track.

All the HPDE I ever attended, nothing was ever said.

I think only racing sanctioning bodies regulate that.

Not illegal, although I have my own thoughts on the matter

You better be doing the sprint race, David!

I use the Valvoline Racing Super Coolant. Its mixed with distilled. I like it better than Water Wetter simply because it does have a hint of a glycol scent to it. I like this because it will alert you to any little leaks that may pop up. Its purple too, you'll get extra internal bling points for that.

On a side note. I'd highly recommend trying the new Valvoline Race Oils. If you run w/o a cat. There is additonal sulfur content in the oil that could prematurely kill the cat. My oil temp guage is lower, I can't say how much but I used to run at 210 and now I'm halfway between 180 and 210 (the only marks with numbers before 270).

All available at NAPA.

I am feeling the sprint race... I'll pray about it tonight and we'll see if I do it.

My main concern about the coolant is that on a warm day up here it is 30 degrees. So, I'll just add a little coolant for the trip to Va and drain when I get down there.

From page 132 of the CCR http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf
"The radiator should not have antifreeze/coolant."

From the Race Car Technical Inspection Form http://www.nasaproracing.com/i...h.pdf
there is a checkoff for "no coolant present". I take that to mean antifreeze.

Hope this helps.

Keith, who has seen some freezing temperatures at VIR in February...

NASA's normal policy is no coolant but for races when there is chance of freezing they usually post an exception. For example, they did this for the 25 hour.

What about Evans coolant? Would this also be illegal for NASA or SCCA events?
