Default Alpine vs. JL Audio

Looking for two subs, and an amp.

Probably just going to get two 10" subs, and a 500 watt amp. A few guys at a local electronics store recommended 10" subs because I listen to mainly rock music, and they would be perfect for that. I only listen to a little bit of rap.

When I was at the store today, I listened to two 10" W3v2 subs powered by a 500 watt JL amp. Sounded nice as hell.

That amp, the JL 500/1, powered each of the subs, or sets of subs that I tried out today. Now, I might get that instead of the Alpine M500 that I originally wanted. The guy there said the M500 isn't for a mono setup, mainly stereo.

Any comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

i think the w3v2's are a pretty good sub 4 the $, but if you want some serious knock i would say w6v2's all the way. they bang hard as hell. you could buy a 500/1 and put 2 of the w6v2's and run them parallel and that would be a bangin setup!! it might be pretty costly but a nice *** system.

*ahem* i have 2 JL 10w6 for sale *ahem*

anyways...

I disagree with what the salesman said about the 10's mainly for rock music. 12's, 15's, 18's, etc will be fine, as long as you have the box to back it up.

The guy who said the M500 is mainly for a mono setup needs to be shot. When playing bass frequencies, your ears aren't going to hear any Left and Right signal. Bass is not as directional as midbass and up.

sooo..get the alpine or the JL, which ever ones you prefer. Doesn't matter much.

As of now, I can get two 10" W3v2s in a sealed ProWedge box for $300 flat. Some kind of special deal the store is having.

Some of my friends are saying that Alpine is a lot better. But, after hearing the JL subs, I just fell in love with them.

Get the JL. $300 is a damn deal for that system. Usually those subs will cost about $180 each or so at local stores.

You heard the JL first hand, you liked it, now why wouldn't you go for them? Get something that you like and you happened to like the JL, so go for it. The alpine Type R isn't as good as the JL in SQ. The type R is comparable to the old W3 though.

The salesperson also said that if I get the JL subs, and a JL amp, it would be better than mixing brands for the components. Example would be if i get JL subs, and an Alpine amp. Something about companies tweaking their products to work best with their other products. Is that true?

As for the amp, would this one be sufficient? JL 500/1.

This is the amp that the guy used to power three W3v2s in parallel. He said that amp could handle anything. Then, he said that if I were to get the package, and this amp, the only way either would break would be if I left my stereo on full blast for three hours.

I really want to have my stuff installed by them. They offer an extended warranty. $15 to bump it up to two years. If something breaks, you don't have to deal with the actual company. They will take back the product, grab a brand new one off of the sales floor, and install it for free.

He's a salesman...he's there to sell you product...that's it....

That's a total bullshit reason. One could attempt to say that because JL decided to put coils that are rated a bit funny in the W7 that a JL amp would work better with it, but you can mix and match all you want. It's rare that a company does everything well, let alone great.

I bet that salesman is paid on commission.

Many companies makes great stuff, and bad stuff at the same time. Example. MTX. Their subwoofers are crappy while their amps are underrated and can take a beating.

Same with Cadence. Their speakers are so-so, but their amps are very nice, even the Q-series.

Yeah, my friend who came with me told me about the MTX amps. He said they are pretty good. After he showed me his system, he told me just to get the JL package, and that amp that the guy was using.

So you think that JL package should be fine for me? Two 10" subs should still hit pretty hard, right?

Yes it is bullshit about not mixing brands, but JL, IMHO, is some of the best **** out there. That setup will hit nice and hard. Go for it. I have 2 12w6v2's running of a 1000/1. JL Audio is shweet.

Mix brands all you want, here is my opinion...

The JL subs are better.
The amps are about the same.
The alpine amp should be cheaper.
Get the alpine amp, and the JL subs run it bridged and parrallel, I would assume that the subs are SVC but if they are double run one parrallel and one Series to the bridged amp.

I guess I should just go in, and talk to this guy Rafael. He's the one who gave my friend a great deal on his system.

My friend bought a RF amp, which was originally $350, but because the store had about 50, or so left, Rafael cut him a deal. Price went down to an even $250. Might also be because he was buying every component from the store directly, and they would be installing it as well.

I'll stop by the store later this week. Then compare prices on both amps, and talk to Rafael while I'm there. The MRD-500 wasn't working when I was there yesterday, so I have no idea how good/bad it is.

I'm stopping by the store tomorrow, and writing down their pricing for all the components that I have been considering getting.

I'm not going through that electronics store for my sound system. Going with a local guy instead.

He talked to his distributor, and he carries mainly every brand except Alpine, and JL Audio. How about that?

How about Pioneer components instead?
