Default OT:'91 Sentra SE-R Should I buy it for racing? (racerjon?)

Hey gang,

There's a 91 SE-R local to me, for a pretty good price, it's only got 80k on it. I was thinking about getting it, I know...non-Honda...but it's got a decent price. How fast are these things with mods? I'm looking for a low 14's in the 1/4, will it take a lot of cash to build these things up? Also do they have a LSD in the front? They seem pretty much as fast as my car stock (0-60 7.6 - 8) Think they handle better w/ mod's? I dunno.... anyone throw in comments about there reliability?

Hmmm... right up my alley...

I bought a SE-R just for that purpose. Yes, they are good for racing... for a econobox. 80k is a nice number of miles, my '91 was 99k and I thought that was pretty good. Reliability is pretty good, they have a few quirks that you need to be aware of. Make sure you visit www.se-r.net and read around BEFORE you buy.

As for mods for speed... depends on how much you want to spend/hassle with. For $1000, they can be as fast if not faster than a stock GS-R in a straight line. For $2-3k, they can be a 13 second econo sleeper.

They definitely have an LSD although it's often compared to a box of jello. IMO, the LSD is what sets it apart from most equivalent choices.

Think they handle better w/ mod's?
Yes.

I'm sure the other four or so SE-Rs on the board will be along anytime now... Feel free to IM me for any further questions!

Don't take my word as gospel on any of this, definitely email or IM others like maxq and slowser and
maddmatt (whose 93 is a dream to drive, I know because I beat the snot out of it on a road course a
couple of weekends ago).
Despite what my website says, it's a '92, but who's counting

A few things to look out for on the SE-R. The early ones were prone to 5th gear pop-out. You're accellerating on the road in 5th, and the damn thing just pops out of gear. At first it is an annoyance, but it means your shift fork is bent. The syncros are wearing out too. Eventually, you have to drive with your hand on the gearshift to keep it in 5th. Then eventually it won't ever go into 5th ever. So check that 5th gear and make sure it's OK. You'll need a rebuild at least, perhaps a new transmission if it's got pop-out.

Another annoyance is the f$%king emmisions stuff. The engine is a maze of smog ****. Rough idle and poor performance are almost always caused by some clogged emmisions stuff. It's not expensive, but requires some time and cleaning to get it back in order. So don't freak out if it runs rough, it's fairly easy to fix.

For engine mods I have: headers, cat-back exh, open element intake (not cold air yet), underdrive pullies, and the Jim Wolf ECU. Next time I go to the drag strip, I expect to be in the high 14s at least on street tires. If I were to purchase some Jim Wolf C-series cams, I'd easily be in the low 14s to right around 14. But I can't drag race for ****, so perhaps you could pull a high 13 out. That's pretty damn fast for a Sentra
