window nets- mesh vs. ribbon
i'm looking at 2 window nets...both w/ the same sfi rating. is one stronger than the other for stuff flying in the window? does the rating take this into account? i like the mesh ones since they are easier to see thru.
I would like to add to this question. Has anyone one used both mesh and ribbons? Which one did you prefer and why? I have used mesh and i liked it, do to the visibility. I see mostly ribbon nets for sale and on cars. Now that i must buy a new one i ask the question.
thanks.
thanks.
mesh definitely easier to see through. i also always had problems with the ribbon style hanging up on the tear-off posts on my helmet -- not really a big deal, but a PIA nonetheless.
note -- window nets aren't really to keep things from coming into the window but rather they are more for keeping YOU inside the car.

I have used both ribbon and mesh nets and much prefer the mesh for visibility. Especially if your driver's side rear view misson is far enough back that you have to see through the net to see it. In one Datsun Z racecar, we had to cut out the ribbons in a lower corner just to see the mirror and you know the strength would have been highly compromised.
I realize that the ribbon is likely stronger but not worth the tradeoff on visibility IMO. A well mounted mesh net is my choice.

Typically it comes down to price. Ribbon nets are cheaper to manufacture than mesh. I have used both and mesh works better for side visibility.
On a tech note, I have found it more beneficial to mount the net such that it hinges from the bottom and connects upwards. This is for two reasons
1.) you can never forget to hook it in this way.
2.) Easier to exit in a hurry as the net doesnt get in the way. This is ecpecially important if you use a HANS device etc. (just ask Altenburg!)
Has anyone used the in-car net, the one that goes on the right side? I have been seeing these pop up in various cars. I assume it prevents you from flailing around inside the cockpit?

I got the "combo" version... ribbon with mesh... The ribbon part has larger "holes" in it for improved visibility over a regular ribbon. Those holes have mesh in them to keep all your parts in the car. I like it and haven't had issues with not being able to see the mirror. Haven't used the single material versions. Just throwing a 3rd option on the list.

This is what I have been using, but I think the visability of the ribbon is still an issue even with the larger holes filled with mesh. I did it for the reasons mentioned above about the ribbon being stronger, but I think I may replace it with all mesh when the time comes.
