Hell no, use the night mode setting if it has one, most newer camera's have this kind of feature. Play with the shutter speeds and exposure settings. Use a tripod for night shots or the pics will be blurry. Every camera is different, so basically practice makes perfect.

i have a Sony DSC-P7 3.2 MP. bought it used and it never came with a manual. how do i play with the shutter speed? what is exposure settings?

just play with your camera and look through the manual--is there raw mode on your sony?? Recently I have been taking pictures in raw mode with my canon s50 and it's amazing. Also--photoshop can be your friend to

a tripod is a must for any night shot; i'm sure you can find something online to explain how the settings work on your camera. anyways here are two different examples of some night stuff i did a while back.

I believe its like uncompressed pics. .tif files mostly.

I have a s230 atm and will be getting a s50 on weds when bestbuy gets it in stock.

raw mode is an uncompressed format you can take pictures in.

YOu can later the picture any way you want (brightness, white contrast, etc)

I owned the P72 also and there is no adjustment for manual shutter, its all done automatically with a min shutter speed of only 2 seconds

Its the only feature that I hated on the p72.....

U can adjust the exposure and white balance, but thats bout it unfortunately...
