Default Little work I did to a Buddy's GSR

Well a buddy of mine (alfaaay) had a little incident in his 98 GSR. He was rapping out 3rd gear (8200rpms) and well.. Kinda accidently shifted back into 2nd, rather than 4th gear and over-reved the engine. Guess the tach pegged out at 10 grand. hehe. Kinda ran a little funny afterwards.

So I took a look at it, and it seemed we just had a few bent valves, the car had a pretty bad miss. I think he got really lucky, I've seen lots of guys with K-series and Celicas who miss shift and completely blow up the engines.

So I talked him into some performance mod's since the head would already be off, and this would really be the time to do it.

Toda Cams Spec A's.

Skunk2 Cam Gears

Full ITR valve train setup

Even though the head only had 50k on it, the exhaust seats had some nasty pitting developing. So I talked him into a fresh valve grind.

Bling Bling sporting 3RA Surface job

Pistons were not harmed, in fact the valves were hardly bent, but enough to cause a good miss.

Yes, even jeff uses a torque wrench in some areas

Adjusting DOHC Vtec valves made easy... custom tools always help ;D

Overall it turned out pretty decent, I didnt beat the **** out of it to bad : nor did I drive it before hand. But it runs good now. Figured I'd post this up incase anyone wanted to know about this valve train setup.

Jeff

The beauty of it:

Upgrade + repair = $1075

Dealer cost of repair = $1375

Much props to Jeff on all the help and edumacation during this whole process I'm such a n00b with this stuff. We will race again when I get some better launches and some tuning

Ohh yeah, the cams are Toda A's, not Skunk 2's.

*EDIT* - Jeff always has the dopest pictures to go with his explanations .

Untuned I need a fuel controller and an ECU of some sort. Also, they're Toda Spec A's.

Kind of... . It was two weeks between the time I bent my valves and the time I got it fixed, so I forgot to what it felt like before. I can definitely hear a difference. I've got a loud *** Tanabe RM, and when my secondaires kick in, I can't hear it at all... the car just screams

I'm trying to figure out a cost effective way of tuning actually. I'm also trying to convince a buddy to sell me his p72 that he can program with a fuel map, bumped rev limit, and VTEC moved. Think it'll be worth it to hit a dyno with all that stuff programmed and my adjustable cam gears as the main way of tuning?

Out of curiousity, what lube is that, that you placed on your cams prior to installation?

And were those used cams? or brand new never before used?

I'm looking into getting a Hondata s100, but right now money is tight. I figure, to use a Hondata, I need an OBDI anyway, so I can buy a chipped p72 for now and get the Hondata when more cash comes along. If I just went with a VAFC, then I'd still have to deal with my stock redline, and these cams are supposed to make power up to at least the ITR redline.

Still a rusty stock POS. I'm not sure what to go with for a header, but a header and hi-flow cat are in the plans for the future.

The cams are used. They came from my friend's ITR.

The Cam lube is called "trans prep" it's used for building automatic transmissions, when it melts it turns into atf. I use it on everything...

Actually I'm not, we use trans prep on tons of break in items, it works great as an assembly lube. Why do you have a problem with it? 3oz of ATF in a 4qt batch of oil isnt going to hurt a thing.

ATF, I would think would be bad for motor internally.... well techically speaking. If it turned into honda MTF or oil.. that that would be sweet... but I see problems coming from that for some reason....

damn you are WAY lucky. My friend did the same thing, shifted into second instead of 4th at the end of 3rd, he blew the **** out of the motor. (B16A2). It was kind of a job though taking apart the old one, finding all the **** that was bad in it. I mean there was next to nothing salvageable from it. It was hilarious.

Yeah I guess it's pretty random with what happens. Some people blow motors, some bend valves, some get off with only needing a valve adjustment. I know a guy that did it to a b16, went all the way back around to 1k again, and no damage...
