Need Help car won't stay running!!!!!!!! (please)
Hey
First of the car is a 92 dx hatch I bought for a project car to build. When I bought it I never thought I would worry about how the stock d series ran, but when I first got it ran very good. Well now out of the blue the car is giving serious attitude.
Here is the problem I need help to pin point. Okay car is running fine then driving one day at a stop light the rpms fall flat on there face. Try an start it the car turns over and over sounds as though it is going to fire but doesn't. After keeping trying then it will fire and rev up but then sort of sounds to back fire through the intake and then dies. But then you let it sit for a bit an it fires, then if you rev it really high ones running you can drive but have to keep it reved or else it dies. I have tried different computers and checked cap and rotor and wires. I did notice that the previous owner had broke the distributor plug so it never clicked tight so I pressed it tight and taped it up temporarly. The car then ran good for at least 2-3 months now it is back to pulling the same sh%t. Damn I just need to use this motor till my new motor is done being built.
thanks for any help you guys can give!!!!!!

hmmm sounds fishy man....
so the plug that "clicks" into the plug in the distributor - the wires were cut or was it just not "snapped" in all the way..
i read it twice... couldnt get that out.
:edit: i understand now... hmm.. you've agian tried to mess with that plug? Take it out, and put it back in maybe.. have you done anything to the car since you purchased it? Is your timing off maybe?

well I have no idea what the owner did to the wiring, they were sketchy to start with. Oh well I got a new wiring harness to try, I don't think the timing would be off it wouldn't run at all then. Like today I startewd let it warm up for like 15 min go an ran to the steel supplier and on the way home it acts up. I don't want to spend a bunch of money on this motor because I could spend it on my other motor!!!!
the part about the distributor wires is just kinda strange..
possible fuel problem? Clogged fuel filter, bad injectors..
last time my rpms fell like that, i accidently hit my kill switch turning my car off at a stop light... that why i ask about the fuel system.

well I tried different injectors I had the only thing I have been thinking to try was the pump. Like today once it died, when I went to restart it I would cycle the pump twice before I turned it over an then it would fire then I reved the **** out of it to get home. I just can understand that a fuel pump would do this I did swap a fuel filter out to no help.
I have also replaced the plugs too!1

hmmm damn.. i just called autozone and a fuel pump from them is $95 new. THat seems pricey if you just have this car as a beater...
damn... hmmm no check engine light, so your not throwing any codes... i'm assuming everything is stock on your beater, so the fpr would not be fucked up?
Anyone else have some ideas?

Yeah everything is stock all it has is a filter I thought maybe the reg had crapped out but I don't know if it would happen?
And as far as replacing the fuel pump I might as well just but in the 255 right now!!!!!

When my fuel pump went out on my accord it was doing the same thing your car is doing. It seemed like the longer I let it sit, the farther I could drive it until it would get pissed at me and die.
I'm not sure if yours will do it, but my accord's fuels pump is external, under the rear drivers door. When I turned the key to the "on" position, I couldn't hear the fuel pump clicking from priming the engine. You might want to try that. Put your ear to the gas tank(under the rear seat) and have a friend turn the key to the "on" position. See if you hear anything.
If you do need a fuel pump, try a junkyard. I paid $20 for mine. Still works.

did you check the spark plugs? When you took them out (if you did) did you notice anything strange about them besides maybe some carbon buildup?
damn bro' i've went down the line of things to check and possibly replace.. its so hard to pin point things like this... like the dood posted up there'... your fuel pump could be going out. I'm totally at a loss...
for some more thoughts.

try the O2 sensor...makes your car run very very shitty after warming up and driving for awhile if its bad. Mine seemed to gargle (if you can just picture the gargling sound the engine would make) and run very poorly...the revs would drop and eventually die...have to keep trying to restart, and finally would and then id have to keep it almost redlining on the way home to keep it alive. Anyway, give your rear O2 sensor a shot...see if the wirings bad or whatnot...

My cx did this to me and I change cap, rotar, plugs, wires, anf fuel filter before I found the real problem. All of those helped but it ended up being my pcv valve. It was completely clogged. Amazing that such a little thing can cause so much trouble.
