Default Camera mount for non-OEM seats....

I know, I know... the camera mount thing has been beaten to death and then some... I've read all the 17 hits in the search...

But most of them are based on either the presence of a roll-cage or more frequently the OEM seats...

Since I have neither... and wanted to gear up for the Expo, I figured I'd have to start working something out for the R.

I would still like to have a streetable car that will not attract more attention than it already does (i.e. by not adding a roll cage or a 1" C-pillar bar just for the rarely used camera)

The only thing that seems feasible is the suction cups, but I'm not sure I can trust something like that, and plus if I mount it to the rear window, it hardly has much room to fit the camera let alone aim it, and it will have to be zoomed quite a bit as well which will not help the shakiness of the video...

Any other suggestions? (Am I too fussy? sigh)

Please don't flame me for not searching, and remember I that I don't have the headrests to make use of!

If you're going to the Expo, and you have FIA seats w/no rollover protection, then we have something more important than camera mounts to be talking about.

Has anyone ever mounted a camera to the rear strut tower bar, pointing forward? Im guessing it might be kinda bouncy back there and depending on the camera the view might not be the best. But I was thinking about trying this for exb0.

It'll be too low or you'll need to fab up something that'll raise the camera.

Use a C pillar bar. They're easy to install and remove. Remember to get a safety strap for it too.

I mounted a camera mount to my rear deck cargo cover. I use it for track days and it works great. I can take a pic if you are interested. It cost me $30 for the mount and a dollar or so for fasteners from Lowes. The tether attaches to the rear seat belt attachment.

!!

I thought the requirement in the rules stated that as long as I'm using the factory restraint (which is required for both street and Expo(?) legal) without a roll cage with street seats, or a proper harness with a roll cage and race seats....

C pillar bar or film vids while an instructor drives your car.

Suction cups are a negatory.

What kind of seats do you have? Are these fixed back seats or just OEM-type replacement seats?

Is this a trick question?

Just tell him that if he has a roll bar he needs have either fixed back seats or a support structure for the stock seat (so it doesn't give in the case of a rear impact).

If this is not the case please say so as to avoid any further confusion in this matter. Ed

Nope. I think his issue is a separate one than the one that's on your mind.

With or without a rollbar?
The fact that you don't have any rear seats has no bearing whatsoever on the issue.

I have Sparco Torinos on Sparco mounting brackets... which would most likely be considered "OEM-type" seats...

I was considering something like that as well... something that wouldn't be a total waste to have outside of the track. But the view would probably be similar to that of those "hollywood" suction camera mounts...

Do you really think that'd work? It seems to me that you might be introducing a new harmonic with a long vertical attachment.

That sounds basically OEM-like. Do you have a rollbar? Do the seats have reclining backrests?

I haven't seen these seats. The only bad thing I could think of is if they have side bolsters so big that it makes the OEM belts less effective, or if the squabs don't recline.

Personally? Nope.

That's why I suggested the C pillar bar and a camera mount.

I borrowed that setup and the videos came out real nicey nice. Very little in car vibration was transmitted into the video because of video stability and the fact that the IO Port mount had that polyurethane base.

Which reminds me, I need to go buy a new camera, pillar bar and camera mount now.

Just pick up one of these.. They are removable w/the 2 cotter pins on the side.

So, take it out during the day... pop it in for filmage.

Mine might be up for sale shortly if you don't want to pay 135.00.

Hate to bring this back up, but I've been reading about B-pillar bars and how they probably give a much better view...

What about those? George, any particular safety issues with B's? I know Trey had one before... it can't be THAT bad then, could it?

Any reason why you selling your C-pillar bar, DsR? I know there is always an ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness of the C-pillar bars...

I was thinking of doing the rear strut bar as well if I was gonna do the C-pillar, halfway there, might as well go all the way to a triangulation?

The bar is great.. but, Autopower rollbar is on the way and I ended up speding a bit more than planned on it. So I'm thinking the cpillar bar is going to be sort of redundant..or unneccessary.

The b-pillar would give a better view, but I don't think the Cpillar would be bad.

George and the safety crew haven't responded wrt to the "legality" of a b-pillar bar at the Expo. Nice c-pillar bar DsR. I might consider that as an alternative depending on whether I can use (and install) my SpeedWare B-pillar bit.

One last question, what is the diameter of that c-pillar bar (so I can use my I/O port camera mount/get some other clamps for it something).
