Check your owner's manual, but generally an oil change on a motorcycle requires approximately 3.2-3.4L of oil. Changing the oil filter bumps that number up to about 3.8L. Before changing the oil, run your bike for a few minutes, then shut it off and drain the oil. Watch out, as the oil can be warm/hot. Try to get the bike straight, using a rear stand. After draining, put the drain plug back in and fill 'er up! If you're changing the filter, then you'll do that after the oil has been drained. Be sure to put a little bit of oil on the rubber ring around the filter to help it seal. Reinstall it, then pour in about 3.5L (3.0L if you didn't change the filter). Turn on the bike and run it for a few minutes. Check the oil level, and add enough oil so it's between the two marks. Run the engine again, then check it one more time.

youre right, dont know why i didnt check the manual, sorry. it says 2.54 quarts without filter, 2.75 with filter and dry engine amount is 3.59 so according to that i put over a quart too much???? this isnt the first oil change either

Well, consider yourself lucky that you've gotten away with it this far. From now on you'll know better.

Oil level is crucial in bikes. Think about the extensive baffling, compact crank/wet setup, and wet clutch/shared transmission duties. Now try trusting the seemingly idiotproof job to some doorknob

I'm completly new to motorcycles, actually I don't even own one yet. Couple of questions .. how often should you replace your oil filter? If not everytime and would there be any harm in doing so? Are the filters expensive? How often should you change your oil?

Oil filters aren't too expensive. If you get synthetic oil, it's more expensive than dino oil. Oil should be changed every 3000 miles, the filter every other oil change (or 6000 miles). Some people like to change the filter at every oil change - that's up to you.

To clarify, that is for the average unmodified/lightly modified streetbike. There is also a large amount of leeway in either direction.
