help for hpde - virginia R owners with a rollbar and oem seats
https://honda-tech.com/zero...age=4
we are trying to prove to the director of nasa virginia that we should be allowed to run hpde with an autopower rollbar and oem passenger seat. i was hoping for a local R owner to let him take a look at the seat's relation to the rollbar and allow us to run as is with no further rollbar modification. please let myself, or grumpy, know if you can meet him in fairfax va.
grampa, willard, wee-todds, etc????

Glad the EXPO isn't a NASA event, I'd hate to be excluded because of a safety device
Hope these pictures help, I'm not in the area but I could take plenty of pictures if they'd help.

Chris, I'd bounce it off George K just to be safe, because I believe the safety issues will follow NASA's general rules.

I'd have no problem hoping in the passenger seat of that car , as long as the bar gets some padding for both sides.

Yes the bar will definitely be padded haven't had a chance yet (just put it in two weeks ago). I'd have no problem w/ you as an instructor, only met you that one time at P1 but you seemed like a super cool dude

That's the thing though. I'm sure a good number of instructors would have no problems w/that particular setup but "management" might. And if they [management] disagree with you, it's the instructor that's going to be in trouble since they're the ones tech'ing the car.
I just wish they [the management/NASA] would just state "yes" or "no" in regards to this particular matter.

last year the final word came from the instructors , if you saw a problem with your setup you could contact your assigned instructor , which is what one of my students did.
we should wait for Trey or Granpa to chime in though...

Read the thread....
A stock seat is fine, if it is braced, according to the rulebook. Otherwise a FIA cert bucket.
However as an instructor, i would have no problem whatsoever with a stock seat, rollbar and 5/6 points. Most instructors i know would not have a problem. And if NASA is going to discipline instructors for doing this, i imagine NASA will lose alot of instructors very quickly. They are a great organization and i think they are doing the right thing by being concerned about safety of HPDE students. I'm sure 2004 will be a great year

Naw. I think magic hat/Aaron is asking if this setup would be kosher for NASA VA HPDEs (check the CCR thread in RR/AX).

oops.
well its still up to the instructors , tech inspection usually doesnt catch that stuff anyway...

wouldn't properly bracing the seat ruin it? not gonna find a lot of R owners will to do that..

RJ, I did read the thread. Seems like Joe Lee (NASA NE Tech) is fine with this particular setup but Grumpy is being totally vague about allowing this setup on track. Since a good number of us is heading down to VIR this Feb for a NASA VA event, I believe we're just trying to figure out if this particular setup would be ok'd @ VIR.

Yes (IMHO since it was not designed to be braced like this) and yes.

Unfortunately Joe is posting information that is not entirely true. The bucket set is an option, but not a requirement. And i'll re-iterate that i have no problems with the posted setup, in fact i think it is

smitdog, my setup is the same as yours except i have a fia bucket for the driver. the nasa rule was written to keep the occupants from hitting the rollbar in the event of a rear end hit, BUT you can clearly see the oem seats in an integra are basically resting against the rollbar. the only thing i could see occuring is the passenger seat headrest breaks off upon impact with the passenger's helmeted head and their neck gets a little stretched
in my opinion, our integras meet the intention of the rule change without requiring extra fabrication.

no rollbar in my car...
I have no issue with riding in a car with that type of equipment pictured ("Smitdog") .... and since nasa instructors do the technical inspection on each students car it is up to the instructor that you get.
If the car has a stock seat and a 4 point harness I use the OE belt system (with a roll bar) if the car has a cage I prefer a 5 point and a suitable (sub belt bottom) seat.

Yes when Stock Seats are in(as pictured), no harnesses, just OE belts.

what about a 3" 4pt in a caged car with bucket race seat?
<-- doesn't have the 5th pt.. at least not currently.. (well, and technically not the cage or seats yet either, but..)
