I got a nice delivery today at work, so I quickly rushed over to Mike's house (WRX Mike) to install my first mod!!!!

They are damn near amazing.

Everyone told me they would be back breaking stiff and gave odd comments about them, but I find them to ride VERY nicely. They do not even think about bottoming out even on the harshest bumps, and although I do feel nearly every bump in the road, that's what I wanted, and that's what I got.

Body roll is completely eliminated (except for gay tire flex). The car stays firmly planted on the road at all times.

 

Next mod: WHEELS!!!!

what spring rates are you using?

 

The shop I am buying my wheels from (Honda-Acura specialists) won't have my wheels in stock until Tuesday.

My rates are 425F/550R as per suggested by a member of this board. Also, my shocks are set on full stiff, then turned back 1/4 turn because apparently the valves can get stuck when set at full stiff and Koni recommends at minumum turning them back 1/4 turn.

 

i'd say you can drop it a bit more before running into problems,

hatches need alot of drop.. and bottoming out is a big problem,
but you can definetely go lower than that.

heres a tip
for the fronts, if you leave the brakeline brackets off the shocks,
you can just jam the shock down into the shock fork(you'd need to pry it open wider with a screwdriver first), and you'll drop it another half inch without affecting suspension travel, and one half inch at the shock is about .75" at the wheel, so thats a good drop!

 

I have plenty of room to drop it more if needed, but I won't adjust the height again until I get my new wheels. I dont like a SLAMMED look.

Also, the Koni's have an adjustable snap ring that the coilover perches sit on that can be lowered to adjust height as well as the coilover sleeve itself. On the sleeve itself I have about 2.5" in the rear still to play with and about 2" in the front.

425/550 is not too bouncy? im on 425/350 gc/agx and my rear seems pretty stiff.

looks good. let the springs break in then lower it a bit more.

 

what type of problem did you have looks like you are doing some major cutting!!

 

thats pretty stiff springs. i just got a set of 400# 7in for the front and 475# 8 in for the rears. i figured they were going to be borderline streetable. but if you are running that stiff and think they are fine, i should be fine also.

When you call up Ground Control to order your coilovers, you ask for them.

GC can even recommend spring rates for you based on what you do with the car.

Stiffer springs don't cause bounciness, they cause bumpiness. There is a difference. Not having enough shock damping for a certain spring rate will cause bounciness.

Thanks for the props man. I ordered some Azenis today (205/50/15) and while I know they have shitty tread wear, they will actually grab the ground for a small amount of money.


Oh, and that cutting, is from the rear lower control arm bolt. It got seized and the head broke off. We had to cut part of the stock shock off to get the shock out.

 

Treadwear on Azenis isn't all that bad, considering their grip:price ratio. I ran mine for about 18,000 miles before they were done for, and that was with constant autocross competition use.

I'm amazed, someone actually got a nice set-up that we all squawk about everyday.

Nice rates, I'm probably going to switch from 380/450 to 425/550 mid-season sometime after I get used to my current set-up.

I'd leave the ride height as is, or get some extended shock hats to drop it and retain travel. It's not like you get much "body roll" with 425/550s and stiff Konis.

The only body roll I get AT ALL is due to the tire side wall flexing and the play in the bushings.

Solution: Energy Suspension master set (sitting in my garage right now) and Azenis (being shipped out today)
