Does an air intake make your car much louder?
I just bought a stock 1991 civic si hatch and want to put a CAI in it and was wondering what kind of performance increase I should expect and how much louder the car will be. I'm looking into the AEM intake right now (not the short ram)
I know I sound like an idiot but this is my first car but is it a good loud or an annoying loud? And are those few extra hp's noticeble in daily driving or only in the top end?
50hp at the wheels since its AEM!!!! THEY HAVE PROVEN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT!!!
COMPARIBLE PIECES OF PIPE OF THE SAME DIAMETER AND LENGTH AND EXACT DESIGN ONLY MAKE -10HP AT THE WHEELS BECUASE THEY DONT HAVE A AEM STICKER!!!!!!!11

At idle, I can always hear the sound of the air getting sucked into the intake louder on an aftermarket intake, especially when put on a B-series motor. Mine isn't too loud, but some are almost louder than the engine at idle. I can definitely hear it sucking in air while i'm driving, especially when pressing the gas pedal all the way down.

I was also looking at a no name CAI which I was told by the guy who owns the local speedshop is just as good as the AEM for $100 less.
He's got the no name in his turbo crx and says it's fine.

i have the aem cai in my 91 si hb and it is nice. i like it. also. once you get use to driving your car. you will notice you dont have to hear your cai if you accelerate a certain way. if you do not put that much pressure to your pedal your car will sound normal. once you apply pressure to your pedal it does have a deep noise. (not an annoying noise in my opinion) this is just my experience. all i have is a cai and header, and they work great together.

Turbos use a completely different setup when it comes to intakes. The filter goes on the turbo.
I'd say go ahead and get the no name but make sure it has a good filter. You're not really going to notice a difference between the two intakes.

thats very true. dont get aem unless you dont have anything else to spend your money on. you can get a cai setup off ebay for less than 50 shipped. Then you can go get a nice filter if it doesnt come with a decent made one. only reason i have aem is becasue i got it for free. i think they are way too expensive. but its your money and your car. good luck
I have used both a CAI and a stubby. I like the stubby over the CAI becuase the stubby has a little more throttle response, you can drive your through a puddle and not worry about it.
Because you said you are new, there is such a thing called "hydro-lock" this is where water will get sucked into the intake and then into the motor thus creating the motor to lock up.

Be carefull, there's no-name and then there's ebay. As stated before most cai's of the same diameter and length will perform similarly. Check the quality of the filter element, silicone couplings, clamps and brackets. If all that is up to the job no reason to spend more. FWIW, you can find used AEM etc on ebay for good prices sometimes.

I got a short ram made by Konig off Ebay for like $50 shipped...the quality seems good and fitment was good, although I had to take a hacksaw to the battery hold down bolt closest to the firewall so it wouldn't rub.Low end power seemed to decrease but made it up on top end.If you go with a CAI,be sure to get the filter that keeps you from sucking up water (forgot what its called).
